The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Association split its state swimming championships into two divisions this year, giving smaller schools a better opportunity to compete through the creation of a new Division 2 meet.

Elkins won the girls’ title, finishing five points ahead of runner-up Herbert Hoover. The Robert C. Byrd boys’ team had a more decisive win, finishing 52 points ahead of runner-up Elkins.

Girls’ Recap

Elkins swept all three relays, none more important than its victory in the meet-ending 400 free relay to outlast Herbert Hoover and win the overall title.

The Elkins team of Lilly Irons (55.16), Leah Ours (59.77), Sophia Rhodes (58.94) and Lilly Anger (56.64) won the event in 3:50.51, topping Herbert Hoover (3:53.15), which finished 2nd in the overall standings just five points back..

In the 200 medley relay, Elkins won in 1:54.10 behind the team of Aleah Irons (28.98), Emma Ujvagi (33.12), L. Irons (26.64) and Anger (25.36).

The quartet of A. Irons (26.15), Ours (26.43), Rhodes (26.15) and Ujvagi (25.57) claimed the 200 free relay in 1:44.30. L. Irons provided Elkins with an individual win, claiming the 100 free in a time of 54.34.

Individually, there were three multi-event winners:, Herbert Hoover senior Ashton Walker, Charleston Catholic junior Izzy Paulson and Robert Byrd sophomore Liza Saas.

Walker ruled the mid-distance events, claiming the 200 free in a personal best of 2:00.03 and the 500 free in 5:23.81.

Paulson won the 200 IM in a personal best of 2:15.34 and then claimed the 100 back in 1:00.99.

Saas won the 50 free in 24.26 and the 100 breast in a personal best time of 1:04.20.

The 100 fly was taken by Doddridge County junior Isabella McGrady in 1:00.30.

Boys’ Recap

Leading the way for Robert C. Byrd was senior Armondo Montero, who won the 100 fly in a personal best time of 55.73 and was a part of two winning relay teams.

Montero had a 23.07 anchor split in the 200 free relay to help Robert C. Byrd win in a time of 1:35.40. Other team members were Anthony D’Anselmi (24.88), Owen Dodd (24.32) and Samuel Griffith (23.13).

Montero was also the anchor in the 400 free relay, splitting 52.15 to help Robert C. Byrd touch the wall first in a time of 3:31.51. Other team members were Dodd (54.67), Branner Rock (53.52) and Griffith (51.17).

The individual standouts were Wheeling Central Catholic junior Alex Mihalovich and Charleston Catholic sophomore Zach Lanning.

Mihalovich claimed both distance freestyle events, swimming personal best to win both the 200 free (1:51.27) and the 500 free (5:06.53).

Lanning won the 200 IM in 2:05.68 and the 100 breast in 1:01.91, both personal best times.

Other event winners were:

The Elkins team of Dorsey Cutright (28.12), Joel Casto (28.63), Kyan George (26.38), and Kolton Ward (26.62) won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:49.75. Bluefield junior Andy DiNovo claimed the 50 free in a personal best of 22.50. Isaiah Starks, a senior from Philip Barbour, won the 100 free in a new lifetime best of 50.61. Sissonville junior Liam Riley won the 100 back in a personal best of 54.47.
