Grab a Shamrock Shake to beat the heat, then dive into a weekend of Irish celebrations, cherry blossoms, well-rehearsed suplexes and world-class electronic music. Sláinte.

The Cherry Blossom Festival at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park continues through Sunday, running 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. About 30% of the blossoms are in bloom, but even if nature doesn’t fully cooperate, taiko drumming, cultural performances, lantern displays, workshops and a beer and sake garden make a strong case for showing up anyway. Admission is $20.

If your taste runs toward the darkly theatrical, Ruthless! The Musical opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Point Loma Playhouse pop-up space in Hillcrest. The campy, sharp-tongued satire follows a child star willing to do almost anything for Broadway glory – think ambition with jazz hands and a body count. Tickets are $40, with additional shows through March 29.

It’s also opening weekend for The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity at Oceanside Theatre Company at The Brooks. The Obie Award-winning play by Kristoffer Díaz uses professional wrestling as a lens for exploring identity, ambition and narrative power. For a taste of what’s to come, SoCal Pro Wrestling will stage a live match between two of its trainers at 7:45 p.m. before Saturday’s opening night curtain. A preview Friday runs at 8 p.m. ($28), opening night Saturday is at 8 p.m. ($43) and a military matinee Sunday starts at 3 p.m. ($33). A handful of on-stage seats put you right in the middle of the action and come with a complimentary drink for guests 21+.

The San Diego Gulls host a two-game home series at Pechanga Arena in the Midway District. Friday’s 7 p.m. matchup against the Colorado Eagles doubles as College Night and EDM Night – expect a live DJ, neon lights and festival-style energy; tickets start around $28, or $17 for college students with a valid ID. The teams meet again Saturday at 6 p.m. for the Gulls’ 10 Year Celebration Night, with tickets from $22.

Lean into Friday the 13th with an open-air screening of the classic slasher film at Rooftop Cinema Club in Little Italy. The 10 p.m. showing (doors at 9:30 p.m.) lets you watch the Camp Crystal Lake carnage from a loveseat with hot chocolate for $30 per person or $40 if you want a blanket to hide under.

Get your green on early with the San Diego Leprechaun Run, the 8th annual St. Patrick’s-themed race through Pacific Beach. The 5K kicks off at 9 a.m., followed by a kids’ 1-mile run at 10:30 a.m., with everyone finishing “under the rainbow” and earning a complimentary drink. Registration is $59.99 for adults and $34.99 for kids.

Hang out near Balboa Park Saturday for San Diego’s 44th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival, one of Southern California’s largest celebrations of Irish culture. The festival opens at 9 a.m. with the parade stepping off at 10:30 a.m. along Fifth Avenue and Laurel Street, bringing floats, marching bands, Irish dancers, antique cars and enough green attire to blind you. Two live music stages, food booths, craft vendors and a kids zone round out the day under this year’s theme: “Here, There, Irish Culture Everywhere.” Festival tickets are $12.

Keep the festivities going along the waterfront at Seaport Village, where live Irish tunes and shamrock-lit pathways run from 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Grab a bite at Shorebird or Malibu Farm and wash it down with a green beer from Mike Hess Brewing. You can hit “St. Paddy’s by the Sea” at Del Mar Plaza, where the Ocean View Deck hosts live music, games and Irish-inspired drink specials from about 1-7 p.m. with sweeping Pacific views. Entry is free. Farther inland, the Buena Vista Terrace at Rancho Bernardo Inn gets in on the fun Saturday from 2-8 p.m. with live music and St. Patrick’s Day-themed food and drink specials.

Electronic music fans have their own holiday this weekend at CRSSD Festival at Waterfront Park, running noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday. Dom Dolla, Amelie Lens and Eric Prydz performing under his Cirez D alias headline across multiple stages right on the waterfront. Saturday-only tickets are still available at $195 and weekend passes for $379.

The San Diego Wave FC opens its fifth anniversary season at 5:45 p.m. Saturday against the Houston Dash at Snapdragon Stadium. Arrive early to grab a commemorative rally towel while supplies last.
