ASU rushed by Iowa State in Big 12 Tournament, Bobby Hurley’s likely final game ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

Arizona State men’s basketball fell to Iowa State, 91-42, in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday, likely ending the Bobby Hurley era in Tempe.

Hurley is not expected to return after his 11th season coaching the Sun Devils with a contract that’s set to expire this summer.

The 42 points scored by ASU were its fewest this season, 21 lower than the previous mark of 63, which came in a Jan. 21 loss to West Virginia that became the turning point for the Sun Devils’ season. ASU then won seven of its last 14 games after having lost nine of 11.

Wednesday’s 49-point gap was the largest in Big 12 Tournament history. With the win, the Cyclones will next face Texas Tech in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. MST.

Big 12 men's basketball tournament schedule: When does Arizona play?

ASU’s loss at Iowa State in the regular-season finale on Saturday with 22 turnovers was the only time since Jan. 18 that the Sun Devils had more than 14 in a game. They had eight turnovers in the first 6:08 of Wednesday’s contest, 15 at halftime and finished with a new season high of 23.

Pig Johnson had the first ASU points nearly five minutes into the game on a picked-off pass he took for a transition dunk, as he and fellow bench player Allen Mukeba combined for ASU’s only six points over the first 9:32.

No ASU starter scored until 9:45 left in the half when Moe Odum turned his own steal into a finish in transition. It cut the deficit to 19-8, though the Sun Devils already had nine turnovers with misses on their first six 3-point attempts.

Iowa State missed six of its first eight shot attempts but made 10 of its next 13 to take a commanding 29-10 lead with 4:30 left in the half.

Johnson was called for a technical foul going into that huddle for appearing to talk to his own teammate. Additional messy moments between play followed.

Johnson had a foul upgraded to a flagrant for contact near the neck while a player was in the air on the same play where Massamba Diop was called for a technical foul. Hurley received his own technical for his reaction to the sequence. All three technicals and the flagrant came within a two-minute span.

It landed at an 18-0 run before ASU scored its first points in over six minutes, making it 40-12 with 2:46 left in the half. The Sun Devils trailed 45-16 at halftime, tied for the largest halftime deficit in Big 12 Tournament history, with no player having scored more than four points.

The cumbersome offense continued into the second half, when ASU had to call timeout on its first possession. The turnovers came down slightly as Iowa State lightened its defensive intensity, but the Sun Devils’ poor shooting persisted, including an early stretch of six straight misses.

Santiago Trouet was the only Sun Devil with double-digit points (13), also leading the team in rebounds with 10. Iowa State had four players score in double-digits, including two with at least 20 points (Milan Momcilovic’s 21 and Joshua Jefferson’s 20)

Odum’s two assists on Wednesday gave him sole possession of fourth on the program’s single-season assists list at 187, finishing 13 away from reaching the top three in his lone season. He has the most since Ahlon Lewis set the program record at 294 in 1997-98. However, Odum fouled out with 6:06 left in his final game at two points scored.

Massamba Diop’s two blocks tied him one below Tommy Smith’s 69 in 2002-03 for the sixth-most blocks by a Sun Devil in one season. He finishes with five more than the 63 swats by Jayden Quaintance last season for the freshman record.
