NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reports it is a four-year deal worth $112 million for Trey Hendrickson, who leaves one AFC North team (the Bengals) to sign with another (the Ravens) in what is the latest telenovela-style plot twist in what has been a rambunctious offseason in the NFL. The $28 million AAV falls short of the $30 million mark that we’ve seen others hit (and in some cases, surpass) this offseason. But still makes Hendrickson one of the highest-paid edge defenders in the league.
On the surface, this is a solid signing for the Ravens. A four-time Pro Bowler who is just one season removed from a 2024 campaign in which he led the league with 17.5 sacks, earned first-team All-Pro honors, and finished second in the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year race, Hendrickson is the type of player a team needing help getting to the quarterback would traditionally rush to sign. But Hendrickson’s market didn’t take off immediately, which felt odd and led to speculation about what his future would hold. At that time, what we didn’t know was that Crosby’s situation was about to change everything.

Because Hendrickson signing with the Ravens after they backed out of the Crosby deal is just the tip of the iceberg. Because much like an iceberg’s mass, the real story here lies beneath the surface. There is so much that is unknown right now, which has me curious to see how the NFL and collection of insiders cover it moving forward. Will they carry water for the league? Or will they unearth what looks to be something that seems very much out of line.
Frankly, the league should step in to make sure everything is above board. And if it isn’t, some sort of punishment needs to be handed down. Because the optics here are that the Ravens backed out of a trade with another team at the last minute because it back-doored another signing unbeknownst to parties who were part of another deal. This certainly looks like a situation in which Baltimore looks like a franchise you can’t trust with gentlemen’s agreements, which is the pathway to a slippery slope for a league that would much rather have 32 teams pulling from the same end of the rope.
