Blackhawks 3, Mammoth 2 (OT) — Three Stars, Key Takeaways ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

It was an emotional night at the United Center, paying tribute to the late Troy Murray. But a game needed to be played, and the Utah Mammoth were clearly still salty from the way they played against the Blackhawks just eight days ago.

The visitors took the lead in the middle of the first period; I don’t think Drew Commesso ever saw the shot through a perfect screen by… Matt Grzelcyk. It took the Blackhawks 12 minutes to be credited with a shot on goal — and it was a dump-in that went on net. The good news: the Hawks tied the game. The bad news: Utah took the lead back less than three minutes later.

The Blackhawks had plenty of Grade A looks at the net in the second period but simply could not finish. Like… the Hawks had six high danger chances in the second period. Thankfully, one of them went in and the score was tied after 40 minutes.

This might sound crazy but… the Blackhawks dominated the third period. They couldn’t buy a goal, but they had an overwhelming advantage in shots and shot attempts for the first 16 minutes of the period.

And Frank Nazar won the thing in overtime!

Star 1: André Burakovsky

Burakovsky has been the focus of a lot of angst from Blackhawks fans over the past couple months. Heck, even I wrote that he needs to get his stuff together just earlier on Monday. You know what’s great? When the guy who has the fingers pointed at him finally gets one to go. And it was a sweet goal!

Star 2: Levshunov & Rinzel

Yeah, I’m giving this star to both of them. Artyom Levshunov and Sam Rinzel were both physical all over the ice and that seemed to engage their puck handling and skating more. Levhunov was credited with three hits and two blocked shots by the end of the second period. Rinzel had two hits thru 40 minutes of hockey. I thought they were both really good tonight.

Star 3: Andrew Mangiapane

Score your first goal for the Blackhawks and you get to be one of the stars of the game from me. But Mangiapane was chippy all night. He’s giving me some real Michael Frolik vibes early in his Chicago tenure.

Key Takeaways

Full marks to Drew Commesso who was good enough to win the game tonight. Ilya Mikheyev was absolutely flying tonight — and he was playing with an edge we don’t see very often. Thru two periods, he was credited with three of the Blackhawks’ eight high danger chances and a team-leading five individual scoring chances. Connor Bedard had three shot attempts in the first period. No other Blackhawks skater had more than one (the Hawks had 12 as a team). At the end of two periods, Bedard was credited with a team-leading eight shot attempts. He had the primary assist on the Burakovsky goal. Oh, and he was credited with a team-leading four hits thru two periods. On the game’s first power play in the first period, Frank Nazar did all the dancing and left Burakovsky a seemingly easy tap-in but…. yeah. Kinda summed things up there pretty well — which is why he had such a look of relief when he scored in the second period.

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) March 10, 2026 After getting dominated for more than ten minutes, the Hawks were able to tie the game and then a mistake found the back of the net — because of course. Utah’s second goal was not ideal from start to finish. Alex Vlasic lost the puck, Louis Crevier went down early and Commesso left the barn door open. The Blackhawks out-shot the Mammoth 8-6 in the first period in spite of not having a shot on net for 12 minutes to start the game. Ryan Donato was really good between Mangiapane and Mikheyev.
