James Fike, who trains with Texas Ford Aquatics, closed out the Justin Sectionals in style on Sunday, winning the 50 breast in 24.78 to wrap up a weekend of fast swimming.

The 44-year-old was the only competitor in the field to go under 25 seconds, beating out runner-up Adam Fusti-Molnar (25.30) of Austin Swim Club.

Fike turned in an even better performance during the preliminary heats of the event, stopping the clock in 24.49 to post a season-best time and secure the top spot heading into finals.

Fike’s prelims’ performance landed him at #29 on the ranking of top times in the country this season in any age group and was just three-tenths of a second off of his personal best (24.19). His morning time of 24.49 was the fastest Fike has been since setting his lifetime best back in December 2021.

Earlier in the meet, Fike took 2nd in the 100 breast (53.34) and 3rd in the 200 breast (1:57.62), in addition to helping Texas Ford Aquatics to a victory in the 200 medley relay alongside his son, Landon Fike.

Fike currently holds the U.S. Masters Swimming SCY records in the 50 breast (24.19), 100 breast (53.13), 200 breast (1:56.61) and 100 IM (49.61) for the men’s 40-44 age group.

Turning in a notable performance on the girls’ side was 16-year-old Kate Canales, who won the 50 breast in 28.11 to mark the 3rd-fastest time this season in the girls’ 15-16 age group. The University of Florida commit, who swims for the Alamo Area Aquatic Association, shaved .02 off of her lifetime best to secure the championship title in the event.

Other Day 4 Winners and Highlights:

Streamline Aquatics’ Averie Hager took home the title in the girls’ 200 fly with a time of 1:59.29, not far off of her best time (1:58.45). The 18-year-old, who is committed to swim for Notre Dame next season, was the only one in the field to break 2:00. The boys’ 200 fly went to Sawyer Stolarczyk of Hill Country Aquatics, who logged a personal best time of 1:47.03. His performance took over a second-and-a-half off his lifetime best and landed him at #60 on the ranking of top times this season in the boys’ 17-18 age group. 15-year-old Avery Daigle of Franco’s Fins won the girls’ 100 back in 53.79, shaving .35 off of her lifetime best to break the 54 barrier for the first time. Her time marked the 23rd-fastest time this season in her age group and was the only sub-54 performance of the night. Metroplex Aquatics’ Evan Pan-Wang got his hand on the wall first in the boys’ 100 back; the 16-year-old stopped the clock in 48.20, beating out runner-up Mason Schroeder (48.57), who is a senior at the University of Nebraska and swims for Texas Ford Aquatics. Ella McWhorter of the North Texas Nadadores claimed the title in the girls’ 200 IM with a time of 2:01.52, narrowly out-touching runner-up Canales (2:01.68). The pair led the pack by a margin of almost three seconds, as 3rd-place went to Georgia Wimberly in 2:04.44. Magnolia Aquatic Club’s Cullen Kahl posted a huge personal best time en route to winning the boys’ 200 IM in 1:47.78. Kahl knocked three seconds off his previous lifetime best (1:50.86), blowing past the 1:50 barrier and marking the 20th-fastest time this season in the boys’ 15-16 age group. Daigle picked up another victory in the girls’ 50 free, stopping the clock in 22.40, while fellow 15-year-old Kennedi Southern from Lakeside Aquatic Club snagged the runner-up spot in 22.63. The boys’ 50 free went to 18-year-old Landon Fike of Texas Ford Aquatics, who threw down a time of 20.05 to shave .31 off of his lifetime best. Tyler Rose Aquatic Club’s Madalyn Petty completed a sweep of the distance events, winning the 1650 free in 16:18.88. The 16-year-old’s performance knocked almost two seconds off her personal best and marked the 3rd-fastest time this season in the girls’ 15-16 age group. Petty’s time also just barely snuck her onto the all-time top 100 ranking for her age group, landing her at #100 on the list. Kyle Coffman from Texas Ford Aquatics’ secured the victory in the boys’ 1650 free, stopping the clock in 15:48.59 to knock almost eight seconds off of his previous best time. The girls’ 400 medley relay saw Streamline Aquatics take home the gold with a time of 3:44.45 thanks to the team of Madeline Griffeth, Lily Glasgow, Averie Hager and Jaylee Hager. Metroplex Aquatics narrowly clinched the title in the boys’ 400 medley relay, as Hudson Roybal, Charlie Wang, Pan-Wang and Jackson Beck combined for a time of 3:17.40. Just behind was Dads Club Swim Team in 3:17.55, led off by Parker Efird, who clocked a new best time of 48.93 on the backstroke leg.
