A suburban Chicago couple has been accused of abusing an 11-year-old child for several years after the boy was found by a business owner bleeding and bruised, wearing only his underwear, authorities said.
The Fox Lake Police Department said it received a report of a child who appeared battered and without clothes around 9:30 a.m. Friday and was in the area of Nippersink Boulevard and Grand Avenue. Officers said a local business employee reported seeing a child with blood on his face and multiple welts, bruises and scratches on his body.
After responding to the scene, police said the young boy was immediately taken into protective custody and transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital for a medical evaluation.
Officers responded to the boy’s home in the 30 block of East Grand Avenue, where interviewed his 34-year-old mother, Pricilla Marshall, and ultimately placed her under arrest.
Two additional kids inside the home, ages 1 and 2, and two boys who were at school at the time, were also taken into protective custody and given a medical evaluation, police said.
“During the course of the investigation, investigators determined that the 11-year-old male had allegedly been subjected to abuse by Marshall and her boyfriend, 35-year-old Cody R. Marion, over multiple years,” the department said in a release. “The investigation revealed the victim was allegedly struck with household objects, had dish soap poured into his mouth and ears, and was not permitted to attend school.”
Both Marshall and Marion were charged with felony aggravated battery to a child and misdemeanor domestic battery causing bodily harm and physical contact, as well as endangering the life or health of a child.
The children were ultimately placed in the “temporary care of an extended family member,” police said.
Marion is expected to appear in court for a detention hearing Monday afternoon, while Marshall will appear before a judge the following day.
