ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Travelers across the country faced significant delays due to a shortage of TSA workers linked to a partial government shutdown at the Department of Homeland Security. The shutdown has left DHS without funding for nearly a month, affecting agencies like TSA, FEMA, and the Coast Guard.
Over the weekend, airports nationwide experienced long lines at gates and terminals, with security wait times reaching up to three hours. This disruption coincides with the start of the college spring break travel period.
On social media, the New Orleans International Airport advised people on Sunday to arrive at least three hours before their scheduled departure due to the shortage causing “longer-than-average lines.”
According to NBC News, officials said the Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina had delays of 47 minutes.
The funding lapse stems from a dispute among lawmakers over the deployment of ICE and Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis, which resulted in the deaths of two Americans.
A spokesperson from the Frederick Douglass-Greater Rochester International Airport told News10NBC that the airport has one of the few TSA contracted services.
According to the TSA website, the Screening Partnership Program contracts security screening services at commercial airports to qualified private companies that run screening operations under federal oversight.
The companies must comply with all TSA security screening procedures, the TSA website says. Rochester’s airport is contracted by a company called VMD Systems Integrators, Inc.
