Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page widened his tenuous lead over Senate Leader Phil Berger after county elections boards approved provisional ballots Friday.
Page now leads Berger by 23 votes, in unofficial returns. He led by two votes on Tuesday night.
Page picked up 59 votes after provisional ballots were counted in Rockingham County. Berger picked up 26 there.
In Guilford County, Berger added 10 votes, and Page added three.
The numbers may change again before county boards of election sign off on totals. Military and overseas ballots that were mailed by election day have until March 12 to arrive in time to be counted.
The state Board of Elections is scheduled to certify the results at a meeting on March 25. The trailing candidate can request a recount if the margin is 1% or less of total votes cast.
Berger is one of the most powerful politicians in the state. He’s led the state Senate since 2011, steering state policies on taxes, spending, education, and social issues.
Berger had President Donald Trump’s endorsement. Berger and groups supporting him spent more than $10 million on the campaign, much of it to try to drag down Page.
Page claimed that Berger had lost touch with constituents.
The two had a public break in 2023 when Berger pushed for the development of rural casinos, including one in Rockingham.
Page was a vocal opponent. He was first elected Rockingham sheriff in 1998.
