The 23-year-old blasted his way to a time of 21.66, shattering his personal best of 21.99, set nearly two years ago at the Eindhoven Qualification Meet in April 2024.

The swim ranks Niewold 5th in the world this season, and also makes him the second-fastest Dutchman in history.

He’ll race the 100 fly semis in tonight’s session, and is scheduled to contest the 50 free again on Saturday.
Niewold has been having an excellent freshman season at Alabama, recently placing 7th in the 100 fly (45.13), 9th in the 50 free (18.94) and 12th in the 100 free (42.02) at last month’s SEC Championships.
