Welp, it sounds like the Chicago Bears were unable to find a trade partner for linebacker Tremaine Edmunds.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Bears are releasing the linebacker as the team continues to reshape its roster going into the 2026 season:
Bears are releasing former Pro-Bowl LB Tremaine Edmunds, per sources. Edmunds has been a full-time starter in each of his eight NFL seasons, and he now will become a free agent with 900 tackles on his resume. pic.twitter.com/2f1FWm5Fk5
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 6, 2026What’s next for the Bears after releasing Tremaine Edmunds?
Tremaine Edmunds finishes his three-year stint with the Bears after racking up 335 total tackles (190 solo), 11 tackles-for-loss, six quarterback hits, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 24 passes defended, two sacks, and nine interceptions in 45 games. Edmunds appeared to be on pace for a career-best season in 2025 before an injury landed him on injured reserve in late November. And while Edmunds was able to return for the team’s playoff push and postseason contests, he was unable to recapture the magic of his early-season success.
2025 CHICAGO BEARS EXIT INTERVIEWS: Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds
Before the release, the Bears allowed Tremaine Edmunds to seek a trade. And while there were teams like the New York Giants, Tennessee Titans, and Las Vegas Raiders who were reportedly interested in cutting a deal, there was none to be had. Hence, the Bears are letting Edmunds go and hit free agency. The 27-year-old linebacker was a two-time Pro Bowler with the Buffalo Bills and has a first-round pedigree after being selected with the 16th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Even though an injury kept Edmunds from putting up his best season, there figures to be a market for a 6-foot-4-inch, 251-pound linebacker with ball skills.
The Tremaine Edmunds release, once officially official, will do two things for the Bears. Firstly, it will create a need at the off-ball linebacker spot. With free agency kicking off next week and the 2026 NFL Draft on the horizon, I do not doubt that Chicago’s football team will find a suitable replacement. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, the move creates $15 million in cap savings for the team. That money could be used to find Edmunds’ replacement or in other ways. Stay tuned.
