MLB Draft Prospect of the Week: Coleman Borthwick ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Every week during the college season and high school circuit, at least one MLB draft prospect puts together a performance that forces scouts to pay closer attention.

This week, that player is prep right-hander/third baseman Coleman Borthwick.

What He Did This Week

Borthwick was unhittable in Hoover, Alabama, last weekend at the Perfect Game High School Showdown, allowing no hits over four innings of work while striking out eight of the 13 hitters he faced, walking none. Borthwick’s fastball touched 96 and sat 92-95, with his slider showing sharp breaking action in the low 80s.

The Tools

At 6-6, 255, the Auburn commit has the size and easy velo to be a workhorse starter in the pros eventually. He’s a two-way guy in high school (and pretty good at it; hitting .552 (16-for-29) with six doubles, five homers, with eight walks and just one strikeout this season), but he’ll be a pitcher when the dust settles.

He’s got a plus fastball (60) and a slider that’s not far behind, with a developing changeup. His slider sits in the mid-80s and misses a ton of bats, and his fastball looks like it’ll eventually sit comfortably in the mid-to-upper nines with the ability to get up to 97-98 mph.

Coleman Borthwick’s MLB Draft Outlook

Borthwick committed to Auburn in 2024, but the Prep Baseball All-American Games participant and Team USA 18U WSBC World Cup MVP likely never touches campus. He’s on my Top 50 board right now, and the arrow is pointing up with a dominant start to his spring campaign.

I would expect Borthwick to be in the first round conversation with fellow prep arms Gio Rojas and Carson Bolemon, all three of whom could end up being top-15 selections in July.

Prep Baseball has Borthwick going No. 11 to the Washington Nationals in their latest MLB Mock Draft. The prep senior was dominant on the prospect circuit last summer/fall and hasn’t looked back to open 2026.

Why Scouts Are Watching

Borthwick’s strong summer and fall on the showcase circuit resulted in a gold medal and MVP honors for Team USA, as well as a second appearance in the Prep Baseball All-American Games. Prep Baseball’s Shooter Hunt called his 2025 circuit performance “Skenes-like.”

Borthwick has been untouchable this season, allowing no runs, walks, or hits in 11.2 innings of work for South Walton (FL), while striking out 23 of the 38 hitters he’s faced this season. Sprinkle five home runs and six doubles on the offensive side this spring (he won the 2025 All-American Games Home Run Derby), and you’ve got a two-way monster with a huge ceiling.

He has a huge frame, and his developing slider, paired with a presently plus fastball, has him positioned for success on the mound in the pros.

I had Borthwick ranked No. 32 on my initial 2026 MLB Draft Big Board, but as I noted in this week’s check-in, he’s going to be on the move next month when version 2.0 drops.
