“Someone chased me to my car bruh,” she added. “Don’t do that to me.” She punctuated her posting with a crying emoji before publishing a selfie she said was taken from inside a storage closet.
The 20-year-old Californian won singles and team events in women’s figure skating at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina, Italy.
Her inspiring wins came four years after she announced her retirement from figure skating following 11 “insane” years on the ice. She had just finished fifth in the Beijing Olympics and said the goals she’d set for herself were complete.
Liu told Sports Illustrated before the 2026 Olympics began that she was enjoying her brief retirement until a rush of adrenaline she experienced while skiing with friends in early 2024 compelled her to lace-up her skates and head to a rink. There was just one problem. Liu said she had no idea what she’d done with her old blades. Once she found them, she hit the ice, attempted a double Axel and stuck the landing. That’s when the comeback began.
Her return to the ice and undeniable success made Liu one of the bigger stories of the Olympic games, which concluded on Feb 22. But her return to the U.S. and the hoopla surrounding her success appears to have become overwhelming for the University of California, Los Angeles student.
