Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is vying for a fifth term, but she’s facing a strong challenge from Chicago Ald. Brendan Reilly.
Early voting turnout has been strong in the Chicago area, and election officials tell NBC 5 Chicago’s Mary Ann Ahern that turnout could approach 30%, far above the usual 20% or so that we’ve seen in previous midterm primaries.
Both candidates have publicly expressed confidence in their chances in the March primary, but both are trading verbal barbs in the lead-up to that election.
Preckwinkle and Reilly have both criticized their opponent for not doing enough to oppose the administration of President Donald Trump. Preckwinkle says Reilly was nowhere to be found when she was opposing ICE’s “Operation: Midway Surge” in court last year.
“He has long-standing ties to Donald Trump. He had nothing to say last year when the governor, mayor and I were fighting the intimidation in court,” she said Wednesday.
In ads against Reilly, Preckwinkle’s campaign says that he helped the real estate mogul put his name on his Trump International Hotel & Tower, which is located in Reilly’s Chicago ward.
Preckwinkle also says Reilly voted to overturn Chicago’s “Welcoming City Ordinance,” which has been blasted by Trump and his Republican allies.
Reilly, who voted early on Wednesday, fired back, saying he stood alongside her during the fight against Trump’s policies, both literally and figuratively.
“I stood on stage with Toni Preckwinkle and Governor Pritzker,” he said. “I stood literally six feet from Toni during the No Kings Rally in Grant Park last fall.”
Reilly also criticized Preckwinkle for supporting the renewal of a contract with a data company that provides information to ICE and other federal agencies, even as numerous commissioners abstained from voting.
“As someone who says she wants to bring no comfort to ICE on Cook County property, she’s already giving them access to information to help them pick people up,” he said.
Reilly has also blasted Preckwinkle for supporting increases in sales taxes and proposing a “soda tax” in the city.
The battle for the presidency could be one of the most intriguing on the ballot this year, with the primary set for March 17.
