Otmar Szafnauer, one of the most resilient and respected figures in the F1 paddock is officially returning to the pit wall.
After a two-and-a-half-year hiatus, the former Aston Martin and Alpine team prinicpal is stepping into a new chapter, taking the reins of Dutch junior racing powerhouse Van Amersfoort Racing as its new CEO and Managing Partner.
Known for the efficiency of his management skills in F1, Szafnauer’s arrival signals a bold new era for the squad that has long been a finishing school for the world’s elite driving talent, including one Max Verstappen.
From F1 Firefights to Future Foundations
Szafnauer’s reputation was forged in the pressure cooker of Team Silverstone, where he transformed Force India into a giant-killing midfield force that consistently out-performed teams with twice its budget.
While his tenures at Aston Martin and Alpine were marked by his steady hand, they ultimately ended due to misaligned visions with ownership and corporate hierarchy.
Now, free from the "high-octane" politics of the F1 manufacturer world, Szafnauer is pivoting his expertise toward the stars of tomorrow, with VAR a leading contender in the both the FIA F2 and F3 Championships as well as in several Formula Regional championships.
“Van Amersfoort Racing has a strong reputation for developing talent and competing at a high level across multiple categories,” said Szafnauer said of his new home.
“I look forward to working closely with the leadership team and the wider organisation to guide the next phase of the team’s development.”
Reunited for the Future
The move also marks a professional reunion. VAR Team Principal Brad Joyce previously worked under Szafnauer as an engineer during the Force India days, and he is eager to integrate that world-class F1 mentality into the junior categories.
“Otmar’s experience and leadership add valuable perspective to the organisation,” Joyce noted, highlighting the importance of the appointment. “His appointment significantly strengthens VAR as we continue to evolve and pursue our long-term vision.”
