Iconic Chicago Italian beef shop that inspired ‘The Bear' opens in Midway Airport ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A local staple with “unmistakably Chicago” flavors was added to the lineup of restaurants at the Windy City’s Midway Airport on Tuesday.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson led a ribbon cutting of the new Original Mr. Beef location in Midway Airport, the first airport location for the long-standing restaurant.

Midway’s Mr. Beef is open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and can be found near Gate B14.

“Today, we are humbled by the opening of Mr. Beef at Midway Airport. We are truly grateful for the love that our city and customers—from here and all over the world—have shown us throughout the years.  We are honored to continue serving the beef sandwich, a legacy of Chicago culture,” said the Mr. Beef team.

The Midway Mr. Beef will serve the restaurant’s signature hot Italian beef, Italian sausage and combination sandwiches and a selection of grab-and-go deli subs and breakfast options.

“Mr. Beef is a Chicago institution, and I’m proud to welcome that local flavor to our Southwest Side airport,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “This opening brings an authentic taste of Chicago’s rich food culture to travelers from all over the world while investing in a small, local business that has been feeding our city for nearly five decades.”

The Original Mr. Beef opened in 1979 and is located in Chicago’s River North neighborhood at 666 North Orleans Street.

“There are some flavors that are unmistakably Chicago—and The Original Mr. Beef is one of them,” said George Mboya, CEO of SSP America, a company that specializes in airport restaurants. “We’re enormously proud to bring this North Orleans Street icon to Midway International in partnership with the Chicago Department of Aviation and Midway Partnership.”

The no-frills Italian beef joint is well-beloved by locals and tourists alike, including celebrities like Jay Leno.

Mr. Beef gained even more notoriety from people around the country thanks to it being the inspiration for the hit FX series “The Bear” that centers on a fine dining chef who returns to Chicago to take over his family’s sandwich shop. Chris Zucchero, the owner of Mr. Beef, even made an appearance in the show’s pilot.
