In the next few months, people living in some south suburbs will have a new option when it comes to Amazon deliveries.
The packages could be dropped by drones.
On Monday, the company held an open house to get residents used to the idea.
Up close, the Amazon delivery drone is different than Tim and Terry Throw thought it would be.
“Hopefully it will be alright flying around up there, but we will see,” Terry Throw said.
“I like it a lot,” Tim Throw added. “It’s the wave of the future.”
The battery-powered, propeller-driven, unmanned aircraft will soon be flying over backyards in the south suburbs, making Amazon deliveries in two hours or less, for about $5 extra on your bill.
“We open at existing Amazon facilities and we leverage the millions of items available from those buildings, and we offer ultra-fast delivery,” said Josh Brundage, senior manager of Amazon Air. “So, if a customer is within eight miles in range, they will see drone checkout as an option when they place their order.”
The public got their first up-close look at the delivery drone on Monday at the Tinley Park Convention Center.
Prince Cutts and Larry Phillips are excited by the possibility of delivery within two hours of placing their orders.
“I will be the first one in my neighborhood to order a package…i’ll tell you that,” Phillips said.
“It’s going to be something new and different, but it’s going to be very intriguing and awesome for you neighbors to see your packages come to the door,” Cutts added.
The drones will be based at the Amazon warehouses in Matteson and Markham, where the city says they have been working for the better part of a year on the project.
“How they would deliver that package…making sure it doesn’t harm property, a person or even a pet, so they have really vetted this well to make sure this is going to be safe,” Roger Agpawa, mayor of Markham, said.
So, what can you ship by Amazon drone? The first rule is it has to fit in a certain box; almost anything is good. The second rule – it has to weigh less than five pounds.
There are currently seven metro areas where Amazon’s Prime Air Delivery Service is available.
There have been crashes and mishaps, but the company said it learns from every problem.
“Immediate is the learning from the last event in Texas we could apply across the whole suite across the country by the end of that day,” Brundage said.
Prime Air Service in the south suburbs is expected to start in late spring or early summer of this year.
