FAIRPORT, N.Y. — Lucas West, a Fairport native, is making waves on NBC’s “The Voice” as he competes in the blind auditions.
West chose “Bennie and the Jets” for his blind audition, a song he feels deeply connected to. “It’s sort of one of my staple tunes,” West said. “It felt like the right choice in terms of what I could show off with vocally.” West is now part of Team Legend.
He shared his inspirations and aspirations, highlighting the impact of legendary artists like Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Elton John, and The Beatles on his career.
Coaches Adam Levine and John Legend both turned their chairs for West in the middle of his rendition of Elton John’s “Bennie and the Jets.” West chose to join Legend’s team. The episode premiered on Monday February 23rd, and you can watch his performance on the YouTube channel for “The Voice.”
Reflecting on his experience on “The Voice,” West described it as emotional but exhilarating. “Once you’re on stage and the high hat starts, it’s just like, okay, this is what I do,” he said.
West is excited about the opportunity to work with John Legend. “For the opportunity to work with John is just incredible,” West said. “He’s a phenomenal vocalist and a wonderful pianist.”
West has experience performing live, having sung at the Bills Stadium twice. He compared performing for the Bills Mafia to singing on “The Voice.” “You just can’t…cannot beat 70,000 Bills Mafia. But that’s its own thing,” West said.
“The Voice had this atmosphere in its own way where it’s like, I’m singing for my heroes, you know, and musical heroes.”
West is preparing for the battle rounds after another round of blind auditions. He will perform a duet with another Team Legend member. “I’ll be singing a duet with another person on Team Legend…John will pick who he thinks is the best fit,” said West. “I hope that can be me.”
West’s future goals include becoming a recording artist and possibly venturing into Broadway. “I want to try to use this experience to book that,” he said, mentioning the upcoming Broadway adaptation of “La La Land.” He said he will be happy as long as he is “treating people with kindness and doing school stuff.” West is a senior at SUNY Fredonia, pursuing a degree in music with a focus on jazz.
West expressed gratitude for his Western New York roots. “I’m so beyond proud to call myself a Bills fan and to be a Western New Yorker,” he said. “Us artists without the people that want to listen to us are really nothing.”
“The Voice” airs tonight at 9 p.m. Eastern.
News10NBC spoke with West in January of 2025, as he prepared to sing the National Anthem for the Buffalo Bills vs. Baltimore Ravens playoff game at Highmark Stadium. West also sang the National Anthem for a Bills regular-season game in November of 2023.
