ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships for boys wrestling concluded on Saturday with five Section V athletes claiming state titles.
Christopher Noto from Honeoye Falls-Lima secured his second consecutive state title with an 11-1 major decision in the 132-pound, Class B final. Noto will attend Division I Lock Haven after graduating this Spring. He was also named the latest Scholar Athlete of the Week, and his feature is available here.
Noto’s teammate, Jacob McVige, earned his first state championship with a 7-1 decision in the 157-pound, Class B final after finishing second last year. McVige will join Noto at Lock Haven next year.
Geneva’s Gianni Velazquez won the 215-pound, Class B weight class, pinning his opponent in the final. Velazquez, who placed sixth last year, plans to play football and lacrosse at SUNY Cortland after graduation this Spring.
In the heavyweight division, Marion’s Zach Kuelling claimed the 285-pound, Class B title, marking his first state championship as a senior. Kuelling won via pin one year after finishing in fourth place.
Pittsford’s Samson McKissick Staley won the 150-pound crown in Class A after losing in the final the last two seasons. Samson secured victory with a 14-4 major decision and is committed to wrestling at Cornell University in college.
On Thursday, Alexander/Pembroke/Byron-Bergen-HFL’s Jasmine Brucato won the 100-pound weight class on the girls’ side as a junior.
