Including his sole home game in the Premier League as Manchester United interim manager in 2021, Michael Carrick has guided the club to victory in all five of his home league games in charge; only one man has ever bettered that for the Red Devils...
Michael Carrick has done a near-faultless job since becoming Manchester United head coach.
Sunday’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford made it six wins in seven games (D1) for Carrick since he returned to the club to replace Ruben Amorim in January.
It has the fans at Old Trafford dreaming once more, and not just of haircuts. Their performances, particularly on home soil, have inspired confidence and produced vital Premier League points.
Including his one home league game from his spell as caretaker manager in 2021, Carrick has won each of his first five home league games as Man Utd head coach; only Frank O’Farrell has managed that feat before, doing so in 1971 (he won his first six).
Carrick’s side sealed that fifth win against Palace on Sunday, despite falling behind to an early goal from Maxence Lacroix. The Eagles centre-back was sent off early in the second-half for fouling Matheus Cunha as the last man, also leading to a penalty that was dispatched by Bruno Fernandes. The United captain then set up Benjamin Sesko to score the winner, securing that fifth victory.

— Opta Analyst (@OptaAnalyst) March 1, 2026Carrick has earned 23 points in nine Premier League games as United manager (W7 D2 – including both spells). It is the joint-best start after nine games by any manager in the competition’s history, alongside Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham (also 23 in first 9).
Their latest success at Old Trafford comes after three consecutive wins over Manchester City (2-0), Fulham (3-2) and Tottenham (2-0) as United increased their stranglehold on a top-four place in the Premier League in their quest for Champions League qualification.
Carrick’s tenure as caretaker boss at Man Utd five years ago included a 3-2 win at home to Arsenal, before he was replaced by interim boss Ralf Rangnick, whose ill-fated time at the club didn’t last beyond the end of the 2021-22 season. The German did win three of his first five home league games, though (D1 L1).
Alex Ferguson also won three of his first five home league games in charge (D1 L1) after arriving at Old Trafford in November 1986, while Carrick’s predecessor, Amorim, only won two of his first five (L3).
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer won three and drew two of his first five home league matches as caretaker boss in 2018-19, while Erik ten Hag won three, drew one and lost one of his in 2022-23.
It has been a perfect five for Carrick, though, and if he can continue making Old Trafford a fortress, there will be little doubt about the Red Devils securing Champions League football for next season.
To equal O’Farrell’s record, the former Middlesbrough boss will need to beat Aston Villa in United’s next home game on 15 March. Beyond that, their remaining league fixtures at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ are against Leeds United, Brentford, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
Whatever Carrick’s long-term future is, for the time being, he is returning home comforts to Manchester United.
