Dear Mr. President,
As I wrote last week, Trump 2.0 has had many big successes. I supported you in 2024, I want you to succeed. You can complete your second term as a transformational American president. But with respect, I recommend the following course corrections to help make that happen.
America doesn’t have a trade problem, we have a China problem. Since you came down that escalator in 2015, you have demolished the Washington consensus that it was OK for predatory Chinese companies and policies to devastate American manufacturing and compromise vital supply chains. This has been a huge win for you.
But international trade has always been key to American prosperity. America is the richest country in the world because of trade, not despite it. We don’t have a big trade problem, we have a big China problem.
Unfortunately, Trump 2.0 has seen a blizzard of stop-and-go tariffs on most of the world, including countries such as Canada and Mexico that you previously signed “great” trade agreements with. These gyrations reduce investment, keep consumer prices higher and drive our trading partners into new trade deals with China – all bad news. I urge you to focus on re-engineering our economic relations with China while you strengthen our trading ties with the rest of the world. This will reduce prices and help Americans still struggling with Biden-era inflation.
Smarter immigration enforcement. Another of your great victories is securing our southern border. You were 100% right. Democrats refused to do it and then said it couldn’t be done. You proved them wrong, and the American people are with you.
But some of your lieutenants have overplayed their hands in places like Minneapolis. You risk squandering your biggest policy and political win. I urge you to continue to secure the southern border and focus on deporting the “worst of the worst” instead of mass deportations.
Biden lawfare made you stronger, Trump 2.0 lawfare risks hurting you. I supported you in 2024 in part to oppose the lawfare the Biden administration unleashed on you and your allies – BS criminal and civil actions, the unwarranted $500 million New York real estate judgment against you, debanking conservatives, etc. Unfortunately, your people are committing similar abuses at the Departments of Defense (against Senator Mark Kelly) and Justice (against Lisa Cook, Letitia James, Jerome Powell). Lawfare will backfire now as it did on Biden. Stamp it out.
Back off the Federal Reserve. Your aggressive campaign to push the Federal Reserve to dramatically lower interest rates is not working. It will likely result in higher rates to compensate investors for the risks of a politicized central bank. I would move on.
Zero tolerance for corruption. I opposed it when the Bidens made millions on Ukrainian board fees, Chinese asset management partnerships and worthless Hunter Biden paintings. I also oppose it when you and your people make billions in crypto ventures after you pardoned the Binance CEO. You should not be accepting a new Air Force One from Qatar if the plane is heading to your presidential library when your term ends. You ran for president to drain the swamp – this part doesn’t feel like that.

In conclusion. Mr. President, you have already reshaped American politics. As you said this past week, the Democrats are crazy. The multi-racial working-class coalition you assembled in 2024 could dominate American politics for a generation if you play your cards right. Following my humble advice will help you grow your coalition in 2026 and 2028. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
