LONG BEACH — The Newport Harbor boys soccer team was vying for its second CIF Southern Section title in three years when it played Bishop Amat in the Division 2 final on Saturday at Veterans Stadium.

The Sailors (16-4-2) battled for 80 minutes but ultimately fell to the Lancers, 2-1.

Amat won its second consecutive CIF-SS championship.

Bishop Amat coach Steve Jimenez acknowledged the Sailors’ competitiveness, especially in the second half.

“A lot of credit to Newport Harbor. They were well coached and they had a great game plan,” Jimenez said. “They executed the game plan almost to perfection, you know. Two goals that they gave up, but in the second half, in my opinion, they were the better team.

“It was just unfortunate for them that the ball just didn’t want to go in for them, right?”

Sophomore forward Noah Guillen notched the assist for the Lancers (25-4-3) on their goal in the 21st minute. He got past the defender on the left wing and then sent a low cross that Dylan Gonzalez quickly sent past Sailors goalkeeper Jack Shepherd.

Guillen brought some special motivation with him to the final.

“My grandma’s birthday is tomorrow. She would have been 95, so that was a factor for my game.” he said.

Guillen’s penalty kick in the 39th minute gave the Lancers the lead, 2-1, just before halftime.

Newport Harbor had evened the score on Hayden Baker’s goal in the 35th minute.

The Sailors’ Gibson Young started the action with a free kick that was cleared by the Lancers defense. The ball went to Newport Harbor’s Ali Omar, who played the ball to Ronald Kingston-Wolfshagen.

Kingston-Wolfshagen sent a cross into the penalty box area, and the ball was flicked past goalie Angel Castellanos by Baker.

Baker collided with Castellanos after scoring the goal and the Lancers goalie was substituted momentarily after taking a cleat to the eye area.

“I mean, after him taking that hit, and for him to come back out and take care of business, I mean, having the boys seeing that type of leadership is amazing.” Jimenez said of Castellanos.

Newport Harbor coach Ignacio Cid was proud of his team’s resiliency throughout the match.

“I would say the game was the way they wanted it to be played.” Cid said. “And usually when the game is like the way they want to play it, it basically eliminates you. I didn’t think it did that, right? I thought it still gave us a few chances and doing stuff and playing that style of a brand of soccer that our boys aren’t used to. They kind of made it up as they went along. I thought they did a heck of a job with that.”

Newport Harbor’s Landon Baker was shown a red card in the 80th minute as the game turned physical.

“Everyone that’s at this stage is very, very resilient, and… you know, the little scuffle at the end, but for the most part, ending with maturity and pride,” Cid said. “And I understand that 17, 18 years old, that doesn’t necessarily make a lot of sense in your mind, but in a few years, they will understand how well they did.”
