OAKLAND — Bishop O’Dowd needed only 10 minutes to change everything about its season.
In the Dragons’ 3-2 win over Carondelet in the NCS Open Division championship game on Saturday afternoon, O’Dowd trailed by a goal late in the second half and was running out of time to create and finish chances.
A flicker of life appeared when the Dragons drew a foul a bit outside the 18-yard box, setting up a free kick for Kiana Lee Olsen.
She buried it just past the outstretched hands of Carondelet’s keeper in the 76th minute, sending the match to extra time.
O’Dowd didn’t need much. Just over 60 seconds into the extra session, Chloe Keating found an opening down the right flank and pushed a wide shot across the box and past the keeper, setting off a thunderous celebration on the pitch and guaranteeing the Dragons the first Open Division title in NCS history.
“It was just like, ‘We’ve come this far,’” Keating said. “We’ve built such a strong bond with our team, there’s nothing that we could do other than win. When we were in our huddle right before going back out, we’re like, ‘Work. Do it for your teammate. If you’re tired, just do it for your teammate, so that we can all celebrate and go home all happy.’”
O’Dowd (16-0) wasn’t happy. The Dragons were ecstatic after Keating’s goal, her second of the game which touched off a dogpile in the center of the pitch, a cathartic release of hours of pent-up tension.
And a bit of bragging rights to boot.
“I can’t believe it,” O’Dowd coach Mark Savvides said. “People underestimated our ability because of our league, and people looked at our record and said, ‘The league’s weak. When they play someone good, they’ll get found out.’ And we played Amador Valley. We played Carondelet, and we’ve won both. So who do we have to beat now to prove that we’re good enough?
“Because I definitely think we’re good enough.”
