Man City withstood an early siege from Leeds United to win 1-0 at Elland Road and heap the pressure back on Arsenal. Analyse the best Opta data with our Leeds vs Man City stats page.
Antoine Semenyo scored the only goal of the game as Manchester City cut the gap at the Premier League summit to just two points.
Pep Guardiola’s side managed to withstand a first-half siege from Leeds, and wrestled back momentum of the game thanks to Semenyo’s strike on the cusp of half-time.
The onus is now on Arsenal – who are in action against Chelsea on Sunday – to win and restore the gap at the top to five points.
Leeds flew out of the blocks, pressing aggressively and pinning City deep inside their own half.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin repeatedly threatened in behind the City backline and should have done better with his first opportunity inside the opening exchanges.
Leeds had eight shots before City registered their first, and 10 touches in the opposition box before City managed one.
It was a pulsating start under the lights and the home atmosphere is something Leeds have been able to harness to good effect historically. Prior to this fixture, Leeds had not lost any of their previous 25 league or play-off matches at Elland Road kicking off after 5pm, winning 20 and drawing five, since a 6-1 defeat to Liverpool in April 2023.
The key question was whether the home side could sustain the intensity.
Around 10 minutes before the break, the momentum shifted as Leeds’ energy waned. City had weathered the storm and gradually began to apply pressure of their own. Omar Marmoush and Nico O’Reilly were both denied within the same minute as the balance of the contest tilted.
On the stroke of half-time, City struck. Semenyo, operating centrally in place of Erling Haaland, gave the visitors the lead, tapping in after Rayan Aït-Nouri surged to the byline and cut the ball back across goal.
Since making his Premier League debut for City on January 17, only Cole Palmer and João Pedro (both six) have been involved in more league goals than Semenyo, who now has five (4G, 1A).
Leeds were left to rue their wastefulness in front of goal. Their first-half expected goals total of 1.24 was the highest City have conceded in the opening 45 minutes of a Premier League match this season. But they could not make it count.
City’s second-half approach was controlled. They monopolised possession (56.3%) and restricted Leeds to just six shots worth 0.2 expected goals.
The home side rallied in the final 10 minutes, launching a series of long throws through Ethan Ampadu and pushing bodies forward.
Yet City held firm. They know how to handle a chase, particularly when hunting down Arsenal. City have lost only one of their last 14 Premier League matches when playing the day before the Gunners, winning 10 and drawing three, the sole defeat a 2-1 loss to Newcastle earlier this season.
