Arizona State’s pair of early-entrant 2026 NFL Draft prospects, wide receiver Jordyn Tyson and cornerback Keith Abney II, pushed each other toward reaching that status.
Tyson will safely be a first-round pick, his injury history being the major factor that could keep him from being the first wideout off the board. Abney is projected to be picked in the second round, if not late in the first.
They both lofted credit the other’s way at the NFL Draft Combine, reflecting on the work put in over the last three seasons in Tempe that has them staring down the NFL after neither were considered top-200 recruits in the state of Texas coming out of high school.
“Going to the field early in the morning and doing releases all the way down the field, 100 yards, at 7 in the morning right before workouts,” Abney recalled to reporters. “It’s good being with him, somebody that pushed me to be better, I pushed him to be better.
“An elite player like him, an elite player like me, we just get each other better every day. It’s great, it’s awesome.”
Tyson appreciated being prepared by someone with fundamentals like Abney, who has risen to prospect status despite his 5-foot-10 height being shorter than all but two of the 31 other combine participants at his position.
“Very, very, very smart player (who) uses film study to his advantage,” Tyson said. “Definitely very technically sound. If he has outside leverage, he’s most likely going to be outside of you. If he has inside leverage, he’s not biting the cheese and stuff like that.”

Both players opted out of most combine participation, instead conducting interviews while they wait for ASU’s pro day in late March. Abney did participate in the bench press, getting 15 reps to rank fourth out of seven cornerbacks who participated.

The battles between the two always took centerstage at ASU practices, where Tyson’s fire clashed with the joy Abney visibly found in physicality. It made for frustrating moments for each, but they both knew how helpful it would end up being.
“Man, JT, he talks a lot of trash,” Abney told Arizona Sports before the season. “It’s just like, you know, you just want to bring your best game with him ’cause you know if he gets to talking, he’s going to bring his best work. So it’s kind of good when you get into it with him kind of on the field because he’s going to give you his best work. So you going to have to be on your own stuff too.
“But it’s good. It’s amazing going against him. That’s my dog.”
The pair valued the competition so much that they showed appreciation for one another by swapping jerseys on their final day of regular-season practice, as did several other pairings of Sun Devils.

“It just shows you that they appreciate the moment they’re in,” ASU coach Kenny Dillingham said at the time. “That we didn’t have to say anything, that they are aware and they appreciate, you know, these last days of this team kind of together, the last time we’re going to take the field together in our home stadium. They’re aware and they appreciate it.”
