Matas Rising, Ivey, Dillingham Question Marks, Yuki and Mac Light Up G League, and Other Bulls Bullets ...Middle East

There has been one bright spot during our Chicago Bulls’ franchise-worst 0-11 February run: the play of second-year forward Matas Buzelis.

The springy 21-year-old has already been vocal about his frustrations with the Bulls’ blatant late-season tank, but he is at last taking advantage of his extra touches.

Per StatMuse, Buzelis has led the club in scoring (17.6 points), made triples (2.8), rebounds (6.2), and rejections (1.6) since the trade deadline.

We’re all hoping the short rebuild will pay dividends with a top-four draft pick in June. In the meantime, fans are keying in on the production of young pieces like Buzelis and Josh Giddey (who’s been a bit more inconsistent).

Longtime NBA sharpshooter-turned-ESPN analyst Tim Legler, a great hoops head, guested on the “CHGO Bulls” podcast to offer up his perspective on the post-trade deadline Bulls. During the conversation, Legler appraises most of the key new Bulls, even including 2026 unrestricted free agents Anfernee Simons, Collin Sexton, and Guerschon Yabusele. Given that this writer is skeptical any of those guys will even be around, I zeroed in on his thoughts surrounding the two young guys under team control long-term in guards Jaden Ivey and Rob Dillingham.

“So here’s how I look at it: Anfernee Simons has a lot of talent. Jaden Ivey’s got a lot of talent. I really like Jaden Ivey a lot. I’m starting to get concerned now about these injuries,” Legler cautions. “You’re talking about two years in a row potentially where he plays less than half the season… His second year in the league in Detroit, you were watching a guy that’s on the verge of really breaking through. I mean at one point, he’s the second-leading scorer on that team behind Cade Cunningham. And he goes down. So I really like his talent, I’m starting to get concerned about the injuries…

“Dillingham is a guy I look at and go, ‘Man, I really liked him coming out, but he is small. But I really worry about his efficiency, ever, as a guard in this league.’ Is he going to be a constant 40 percent field goal shooter, 30 percent 3-point shooter, and a guy that can get attacked defensively because of his size? I worry about it.”

Meanwhile, in Portland, Maine, the Bulls’ two-way guard signings put on a show Friday night. Three-time Slam Dunk Contest champion Mac McClung and Yuki Kawamura helped power our Windy City Bulls to a 121-106 blowout road win at the Portland Exposition Building.

He also chipped in 11 points, albeit on a rough 4-of-20 shooting line from the floor. McClung wrapped up the night with his fourth straight 30-plus-point game and his 13th on the year, finishing with 33 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field (3-of-7 from distance) and 4-of-6 shooting from the foul line. Let’s see these guys get activated and get some run on Chicago proper, they’re just too much fun. Does Chicago want to bring aboard two more short, veteran guards? Because HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto reports that the Phoenix Suns are cutting Cole Anthony, while Shams Charania of ESPN indicates that Tyus Jones is being waived by the Dallas Mavericks. Dallas will now promote two-way rookie signing Ryan Nembhard to a standard roster deal. Our fingers are crossed that Arturas Karnisovas is done for the year. The San Antonio Spurs are adding some long-term Luke Kornet insurance. Priority Sports agent Mark Bartelstein informs Charania that, fresh off a 10-day deal with San Antonio, 13-year NBA journeyman center Mason Plumlee is inking a rest-of-season agreement to stick with the rising Spurs. Plumlee has yet to actually play for San Antonio this season. He only appeared in 14 games with the Charlotte Hornets this year, averaging just 1.9 points and 2.9 rebounds across 8.9 mop-up minutes a night as an occasional deep-bench option. Following three seasons on a two-way deal, the Indiana Pacers are promoting guard Quenton Jackson to their standard roster via a three-year deal, according to Charania. Yesterday, it was reported that aging former three-time All-Star Khris Middleton is considering a buyout from the Dallas Mavericks to possibly join a contending team down the home stretch of the season. Per Ron Harrod Jr. of DLLS Sports, Mavericks coach Jason Kidd acknowledged that the veteran swingman will resolve his situation expeditiously.

“That’s up to Khris. We support whatever decision he makes if he’s going to stay or if he’s gonna get bought out,” Kidd said. “But I think he’s gotta make that decision here pretty quick.”
