HUNTINGTON BEACH — History was going to be made one way or another.
In a final that featured two schools making their first appearance in a CIF Southern Section championship game, it was Segerstom that earned a historic victory Friday in the CIF-SS Division 6 final against league rival Ocean View.
The Jaguars used a three-goal spurt in the second half to beat the Seahawks 4-0 at Ocean View High for the first CIF-SS championship in program history.
Freshman Aymar Salgado scored two goals, both off headers, and Isabella Barrera and Jewel Orellana each notched a goal.
Segerstrom coach Diego Aguirre felt vindicated after last season’s loss to Whittier Christian in overtime in the semifinals.
“We were so close last year. You know, we played with the chip on our shoulder,” Aguirre said, “and we felt that we should have been here last year. But now that we got all these girls back, along with our youth and experience. I mean, we got two goals from a freshman, and one from a sophomore, so, I mean, we’re just building up for our program. Yeah, we’re just very excited. We’re super excited.”

(Photo by David Delgado)Barrera, who is also a freshman, found the back of the net in the second half on a brilliant 25-yard shot that got behind Ocean View keeper Sydnie Enriquez to make the score 2-0.
Two minutes later, Orellana, a sophomore, slotted home a cross in the box to make it 3-0 and Salgado’s second header made it 4-0 in the 60th minute.
The Seahawks were struggling to maintain possession of the ball in the first half and the Jaguars slowly started to build their attacking chances.
Salgado’s first goal came off a corner kick from Barrera which was headed strongly past Enriquez in the 29th minute.
“That was my first header ever, I was so surprised.” Salgado said. “I was just trying to like, match my run, timing it, and I headed it. Oh my god, it’s unbelievable. That feeling was incredible, it was insane.”
Aguirre also praised his team’s defense, which gave up only one goal in the CIF-SS playoffs.
The back line was anchored by his two senior captains, center backs Jazmin Corcino and Danielle Dominguez.
“Since day one, they put the emphasis on what we were gonna do with all the girls,” Aguirre said of his captains. “You know, everybody plays defense, everybody plays offense. So it’s everybody’s responsibility. And they did a great job in promoting that the whole season. That’s why we got here to this point, along with our goalkeeper,(Isabel Valdivia).”
Segerstrom beat Ocean View twice during the regular season en route to winning the Orange Coast League championship.
