“It’s sad — this is a textbook example of what a successful campaign to separate a family looks like,” the anonymous friend told TMZ. The friend is referring to a situation in acrimonious divorces when one parent supposedly works in various ways to turn the children against the other parent.
It was learned this week that the former Maddox Jolie-Pitt, the oldest of the couple’s six children, had stopped using “Pitt” in his last name, People reported. The 24-year-old listed his name as Maddox Jolie in his credits as the assistant director on the new movie “Couture,” which stars his mother as an American film director who is diagnosed with breast cancer as she arrives in France to make a video for a Paris fashion show.

Around the same time, their daughter Shiloh hired her own attorney and went to court when she turned 18 to have Pitt legally dropped from her surname. Her attorney told the Los Angeles Times at the time that Shiloh was a young adult who “made an independent and significant decision following painful events.”
Supporters of Jolie would say that these “painful events” are the reasons the children made up their own minds to limit their relationship with their famous father or to avoid him altogether. That’s especially true of Maddox Jolie. Reports that he became estranged from his father almost immediately followed news that Jolie had filed for divorce in September 2016. Jolie reportedly wanted out of one of Hollywood’s most famous marriages after a notorious plane ride from France to Los Angeles, during which Pitt allegedly drank too much and became angry and physical with Jolie, Maddox and the other children. That altercation led to Pitt being investigated by the FBI and Child Protective Services. Pitt denied ever being abusive to his children, and no criminal charges were ever filed.
But during the couple’s bitter and years-long divorce battle, the domestic violence allegations resurfaced and reportedly contributed to the actor’s estrangement from most, if not all, of his six children.

In 2023, the Daily Mail reported that Pax, as a 16-year-old, slammed Pitt on his private Instagram account in 2020, calling his adopted father “an awful human being” after the actor won an Academy Award for his performance in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Pax also called his father “a terrible and despicable person” who makes the youngest of his six children “tremble with fear.”
It was reported last summer that Pitt held out hope for a reconciliation with some of his children but that he had become resigned to never having a relationship with his two oldest sons, Maddox and Pax. Incidentally, those two young men both were first adopted by Jolie from Cambodia and Vietnam, respectively, before Pitt legally signed on to be their father, early in his relationship with their mother. The couple subsequently adopted Zahara from Ethiopia, while Shiloh and twins Vivienne and Knox are the ex-couple’s birth birth children.
When Shiloh decided to legally drop the Pitt surname, a source close to Pitt told People: “The reminders that he’s lost his children, is of course not easy for Brad. He loves his children and misses them.”
