Bears GM Ryan Poles Says Darnell Wright Extension is “Definitely a Priority” ...Middle East

Darnell Wright was the first first-round pick made by Chicago Bears General Manager Ryan Poles in April 2023. Three years later, the Bears area already looking at giving him a contract extension. When you dive into his tape and the numbers, you can understand why a Wright extension figures to be a priority for this team in the offseason.

Darnell Wright’s 2025 Snapshot

The 10th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Darnell Wright has spent the first three years of his career cementing his place as a building block for the Chicago Bears. After watching what he did in 2025, I think it is fair to say that Wright has established himself as an anchor — not just for the offensive line — but for this team.

THIS DARNELL WRIGHT BLOCK WAS MY FAVORITE PLAY FROM WEEK 10

Wright missed just one game, but still logged more than 1,000 snaps at right tackle this season. And they were mostly great. Wright finished as one of Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded offensive tackles. His pass-blocking was commendable, with ESPN’s Pass Block Win Rate metric ranking him as a top-5 tackle after he posted a 95 percent win rate. His run-blocking prowess was elite, too. Pro Football Focus gave Wright an 85.6 grade that checked in among the 10 best of all offensive tackles. No wonder Darnell Wright earned second-team All-Pro honors this season.

Darnell Wright’s Contract Status

Wright is entering Year 4 of his rookie contract, which was a four-year deal worth $20,968,270. Going into the 2026 season, Wright has a cap number of $6,671,722. To give that number some perspective, it represents just 2.2 percent of the cap. For as much as football folks obsess over maximizing a quarterback’s rookie contract, it gets overlooked how valuable top-tier offensive linemen on rookie-scale deals can be for their respective teams.

Turning The Page

As part of a wide-ranging discussion with FOX-32’s Cassie Carlson, Bears General Manager Ryan Poles said signing right tackle Darnell Wright was “definitely a priority.”

There is a lot going on for Chicago’s football team and its general manager right now, with the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis underway and free agency lurking once the calendar flips to March. But once things settle down, I have no doubt that Wright and the Bears will sit down and hash out a deal.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think Poles is doing lip service here. The Bears GM spoke of a Wright extension in a way that reminded me of how he talked about getting a Joe Thuney deal done last offseason. Perhaps lightning strikes twice. I’m not really a betting man, but I’d be comfortable wagering that a Wright extension gets done at some point before the 2026 NFL season kicks off in September.

But before we get a Darnell Wright extension on the boards, I figure the team will exercise the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, which the Tribune’s Brad Biggs forecasts to be somewhere in the $20.5 million range. As for what an extension might look like, Biggs estimates that a contract t in the range of $25 million per year could get it done. We’ll do some digging on some comps later in the offseason.
