Colorado ranks 28th in the nation for family home buyers, according to a new study that scored the state at 51 out of 100.

A study by Cinch Home Services analyzed 48 factors, ranging from housing prices to education quality and road safety, showcasing both strengths and challenges for families looking to buy homes in the Centennial State.

While Colorado fell behind Midwest leaders like Minnesota, Nebraska, and Kansas—who dominated the top 10 for their mix of affordability, safety, and green space—Colorado stands out for its work-life balance (69) and education quality (59).

These strong points make the state attractive to families who prioritize career flexibility and access to good schools.

However, the study found that housing affordability remains a major hurdle for Colorado families.

Despite outperforming states like Texas and Missouri in some areas, the high cost of buying a home pushed Colorado’s ranking down.

The state’s overall score places it in the middle of the pack, showing the trade-offs families face: high quality of life and education, but at a steeper price.

Nationally, Minnesota topped the list with a score of 62, thanks to its abundant green space and strong safety ratings. Nebraska and Kansas followed, largely due to affordable housing and reliable road safety.

In contrast, states like New Mexico and Louisiana scored lowest, with crime and education concerns offsetting lower housing costs.

For Colorado families and home buyers, the study stresses the importance of evaluating not just the price tag but also the full spectrum of factors—education, safety, and quality of life.

As housing prices continue to rise, the state’s appeal will depend on balancing cost-effectiveness with its existing strengths.

Creating family-friendly communities

Ryan Delp, Denver market president for Oakwood Homes, said the company works to develop family-friendly communities that adapt to modern lifestyles.
