ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Roc the Future Alliance released its 13th annual State of Our Children report, highlighting both progress and ongoing challenges in the Rochester City School District.
Leaders gathered at the Theatre at Innovation Square to discuss educational readiness in the district. They expressed concerns about reading scores, describing them as devastating. African American and Latino students are reportedly the most underserved. Only 5.1% of 8th graders are proficient in math, and 3 in 10 students do not graduate high school in four years, although this number has improved over time.
Brian Lewis, executive director of Roc the Future Alliance, noted improvements over the last decade. Brian Lewis, Roc the Future Alliance: “We’ve also seen a bounce back from the pandemic. Obviously, the pandemic was a huge hit to academic outcomes for all of Rochester’s kids, and we’ve seen gains to return to at least pre-pandemic levels.” Looking ahead, Roc the Future Alliance aims to increase kindergarten readiness and high school graduation rates by 2027. The report also emphasizes the importance of parent and youth partnerships in achieving success. The full report is available on WHEC.com.
