Six shows (and some rooftop movies) to see in San Diego this weekend ...Middle East

News by : (Times of San Diego) -

You already know about Hedda Gabler, The Recipe, and Somewhere Over the Border. But theater season is in full swing in San Diego, so here are six more shows for your consideration. Plus a whole bunch of movies at Rooftop Cinema Club’s new location in Little Italy!

Beetlejuice: The Musical. The Musical. The Musical.

See it three times! (Photo courtesy of Broadway San Diego Facebook)

Wait: the movie was already a musical. I mean, I think I fell in love with Winona Ryder right here. And speaking of Winona Ryder and ’80s movies that became musicals, I never understood why the Heathers musical didn’t make a song out of the Megabitch scene. Getting back to the matter at hand, it looks like they missed a similar opportunity here with “You’re Talking to a Dead Guy!” And it’s weird that the biggest song goes on and on about death when the story is absolutely about life — even if it is the afterlife. Still, it’s a huge hit.

Remember Raya and the Last Dragon? No? Poor Lindsay Ellis probably does! Happily, there’s a better story of a young girl and her dragon companion out there, and now it’s a musical that follows the journey of Minli, a brave and curious young girl who sets out on a quest to change her family’s fortune. Along the way, she encounters magical creatures, unexpected friends, and the legendary Old Man of the Moon. And here’s a little bonus for your brilliant little Theater Kid-in-the-making: composer/lyricist Min Kahng will join the creative team for an audience talkback after the matinee on February 28. Because the magic of theater needs a magician or two to do the conjuring!

In vino veritas, goes the old saying. (Well, yes and no, as anyone who’s ever said, “I’m so sorry, I was drunk, I didn’t mean that” will attest.) But if fermentation brings revelation, then distillation brings amplification: in whiskey, there is truth twisted into whatever shape will do the most damage and launched right at the heart of your best beloved, with plenty of collateral damage for anyone who happens to be standing by. At least, that’s the case with Edward Albee’s magnificent and awful war of words between a disappointed academic and his disappointed wife, with a couple of recent arrivals as witnesses.

Bartleby

Never mind quiet quitting — that’s a rookie move, born of despair. Bartleby’s work-avoidance tactic was considerably more audacious: taciturn time-off. Do yourself a favor and read the original before venturing forth to see Fiasco Theater’s absurdist take on Melville’s classic story.

The Book of Will

Plays live on stage, but they survive in books (Event poster)

We’ve just had a sad movie about William Shakespeare and the death of his child; how about a funny play about William Shakespeare and the survival of his literary children, thanks to the collection and publication of the First Folio by the members of his company? As for the chutzpah required for a playwright to tackle The Bard, it’s surely worth noting that Gunderson has been America’s most produced playwright for 10 years now.

White Privilege

One night only. Take it away, promo copy: White Privilege by Malaina Moore is a powerful and provocative theatrical examination of race, privilege, and systemic injustice in America. Structured as a series of intersecting vignettes, the play gives voice to both the ignorance that sustains oppression and the lived realities of those most harmed by it. Through satire, raw testimony, historical reckoning, and searing dialogue, White Privilege dismantles the myths of ‘colorblindness,’ exposes the violence of cultural appropriation and gentrification, and confronts the generational trauma of anti-Black racism. By weaving together classroom dynamics, therapy sessions, media narratives, and direct address to the audience, Moore forces us to question not only what privilege is—but how it operates in daily life, institutions, and history. At once deeply personal and urgently political, White Privilege is a necessary work of theatre that challenges audiences to move beyond denial and toward accountability. Contains strong language, racial slurs, and themes of systemic racism, police violence, and trauma.” Talk about burying the lede!

Rooftop Cinema Club’s Grand Opening in its new location

Cheers, old sport! (Publicity photo)

My teenage daughter just got asked out on a date. How delightfully retro! The young fellow suggested taking her to a movie. Now, “What movie?” wasn’t the first question out of my mouth, but it was close. He suggested Crime 101 — probably savvy, not going to for a rom-com the first time out. But The Greatest Showman at Rooftop Cinema Club’s new location probably would have been even better — romance at the secret heart of things, under all the glitter and greasepaint and song and dance. And what a location! He’s young; he’ll learn.
