Cade Horton’s Spring Training debut was more or less completely uneventful. Two innings, 26 pitches, typical velocity, felt fine. That’s exactly what you want, even setting aside the (good) results. No one needs Cade Horton to be a February hero.
And no, there’s no reason to worry about Horton at 96 mph in the game when he’d been reportedly showing 97+ in his first live BP session.
“My first live BP, the first time facing hitters, I was a little juiced up,” Horton said, per Cubs.com. “The second time I faced them, velo dropped back down. I felt like I was kind of working on stuff more. It’s just kind of finding that happy medium to where you set a good foundation, but you’re not overdoing it too early. I feel like I did a good job of that [against Colorado].”
Horton said he expected a little more rust than he actually felt, which is always encouraging, and he’s just trying to give himself a good build up to the season. He said he was executing pitches well, and it was good to compete again after a long offseason. More from Horton:
And just for fun, the pitch that could truly be a separator for him this season (and I love how the execution gets better and better as the video goes on):
Cade Horton was dominant in the 2nd half last year— a 1.03 ERA and finishing with a 2.67 ERA overall (118 innings).Cade dominated in part because of a new changeup. He used it primarily against lefties. Another out pitch. Here's video of every changeup whiff from last year. pic.twitter.com/B2pv5OEMZK
