North coast painters carry their groove to Ukiah ...Middle East

The Mendocino College Gallery presents ‘Don’t Disturb This Groove,’ a group exhibition honoring the vibrant and ever-unfolding tradition of painting at Cal Poly Humboldt (the campus still known to many Mendocino County residents as Humboldt State). The title is borrowed from the lyrics of a beloved song that holds particular meaning within the Painting Lab, where professors Eliseo Casiano and Gina Tuzzi teach. Etched above the doorframe, the words ‘Don’t Disturb This Groove’ greet every student who enters the art studio, serving as a reminder to protect the creative flow, trust the process, and honor the shared spirit of making.

This show at Mendocino College honors fifteen years’ worth of connection, caring, and creative bonding between two art professors, one of their woodshop technicians, and fifteen painting alumni from their programs. Gina Tuzzi and Eliseo Casiano, the professors, each have a considerable body of work on the gallery walls, with one piece by each of the other participants.

Tuzzi is friends with some of the art faculty at Mendocino College, which is the spark that led to this show by our northern neighbors. Originally planned as a two-person exhibition of just the professors, the show evolved so they could celebrate their students as well.

“This is an experience full of joy,” says Tuzzi. “Eliseo and I have intersections of our visions, though the art we each make is very different. We have both connected deeply with so many of our art students over the years that we knew we had to involve them in this show.”

Casiano elaborates, “We don’t have a theme, but we are all unified by our celebration of color and the common thread of our relationship to the north coast landscape and our deep connection with the land. Our show is sort of a collaboration since teachers and students spend so much time working together that we all influence each other to some degree.”

‘Don’t Disturb This Groove’ opened last Thursday at Mendocino College to a packed room of visitors. Many of the alumni artists made the snowy drive down Highway 101 to support each other and enjoy the beauty of their show, curated and hung by college gallery director Jazzminh Moore. “I’m so excited to be doing this! The work is deeply inspiring to me, as an artist,” states Moore. “The calibre of painting in this show is high. It’s a pleasure to host the Cal Poly Humboldt Art Department and foster this connection for our Mendocino College art students.”

Moore continues, “I enjoyed hearing more about Gina Tuzzi’s process. She was part of a collaborative group in college, which led to the different modalities of paint handling within each of her paintings. There is generally a background image painted in a wet, soft-edged, brushy, semi-transparent technique. Then, there are areas of opaque, flat color. Finally, smaller hyper-detailed symbolic images are occasionally painted over the top, like stamps, in the foreground. This mash-up of painting techniques is consistent throughout her work, reflecting a strong, unique voice. Also, the color palette is enthralling. Pinks, purples, and periwinkle are balanced by warm green. It’s lovely.”

The show will continue through March 23rd. Regular gallery hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays between 12:30 and 3:30 PM, and Wednesdays from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM, or by appointment.

The Gallery is also open for most Center Theatre performances, including the upcoming play, RUMORS, opening March 5th and running through March 15th. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday shows are at 7:30 PM, with a final Sunday matinee at 2 PM. Tickets are $20 general admission, $15 for students and seniors.
