No. 5 Alabama softball shutouts UAB in 14th straight win ...Middle East

No. 5 Alabama softball faced off against UAB on Tuesday and shut out the Blazers 8-0. This marks Alabama’s 14th straight win.

The Crimson Tide run-ruled the Blazers in five innings. The first inning went by without any runs from either team. UAB had one hit during the top of the second but failed to score.

During the bottom of the second, Alabama’s Salen Hawkins singled to center field, making it to first base. Infielder Jena Young followed her lead with a single through the right side. Two batters later, pitcher Alea Johnson brought Young and Hawkins home with a double to center field.

“The thing that we’ve said forever is that the best way to respect an opponent is to get at them,” head coach Patrick Murphy said. “If you just go through the motions against anybody in any sport, the other team’s gonna see that.”

In the third inning, UAB had another hit but was unsuccessful in making it home. Hakwins hit a three-run home run to left field.

UAB went hitless in the fourth. Alabama had two hits, and Johnson scored after right fielder Ana Roman hit an RBI single to right field.

Jocelyn Briski, recovering from a leg injury, pitched again for the Crimson Tide along with freshman Kaitilyn Pallozzi, who stepped in to relieve her.

Murphy says Briski is still on a pitch count, but is working her way back from injury.

“We were thinking maybe three innings,” Murphy said. “Then when she hardened through the pitches, she got another one.”

The two combined to throw 57 pitches with an 84% strike rate.

In the fifth, UAB had two hits, but the runners were left stranded on base again. Alabama closed out the game in the fifth after first baseman Ambrey Taylor doubled to left center, allowing third baseman Mari Hubbard and pinch hitter Gerritt Griggs to score.

“ That was her biggest hit of her career so far,” Murphy said of Taylor. “With two outs I went up and I said, ‘Hey, I’m sending Mari, so just get it in the gap, and you can end the game right now and we’ll go celebrate with you.’”
