SAN DIEGO – The Mission Bay High boys soccer team’s season came to a heartbreaking end on Feb. 17 in the opening round of the CIF playoffs — via penalty kicks to Otay Ranch.
The match ended 2-2 in regulation time with both sides creating quality scoring chances throughout, only to see Otay Ranch score on all its penalty shots while Mission Bay was only able to convert on one.
The Bucs had an outstanding regular season, which saw the team finish with a 10-3-4 record. Last season, Mission Bay had a 14-4-3 overall record, which included two postseason wins over Preuss UCSD and Canyon Crest Academy.
“We had a lot of opportunities and took it to them, especially in the second half, but were unfortunate on the goals we conceded and the result,” said head coach Joe Panian. “I’m extremely proud of the guys and how they played all year.”
Mission Bay opened up the season strong by going undefeated over its first seven games with victories over Clairemont, Canyon Hills, Mater Dei, La Jolla Country Day, La Jolla High, and Madison, outscoring those opponents by a combined 12-1, including five shutouts. The only draw during that span came versus Gompers Prep Academy in the season opener on Dec. 3.
The Bucs did not suffer a defeat until Jan. 9 at the hands of St. Augustine by 2-1, followed by a 0-0 draw against Point Loma on Jan. 14.
“Some of these guys who are seniors and juniors were here when we were Div. IV and when we went undefeated,” Panian added. “Now we’ve been competing against the best that the City Conference has to offer. I’m very proud of seeing the team concept implemented and how they’ve applied everything I have asked them to do.”
The Bucs moved up to Div. III in 2024-2025, where the team made it to the semifinals. They moved up again to Div. II this time around. Mission Bay ended up finishing tied for second in points within the Western League City Conference standings alongside Scripps Ranch.
The outstanding players who stepped up throughout the season were defenders Evan O’Connell and Kai Broitman, along with forwards AJ Anderson and Evan Vaden.
