In this week’s show, amongst the ideas I shared, I talked about the research into Privilege. Three research projects all point to the same conclusion: once we are in a privileged position, even if we didn’t ‘earn’ it, we quickly become blind to that privilege and act, well, privileged with little if any self-awareness.

It seems that, yes, we are blind to our privilege.

I prefaced sharing this research with the acknowledgement that I am a very optimistic guy about the human condition and these research findings just might be the biggest challenge to my optimism.

So let me offset that pessimism with archeological and anthropological findings that fuel my optimism and, I hope, yours.

There are multiple examples of these scenarios in Neolithic times from around the world in communities that relied heavily on a seasonal protein source. Let’s choose salmon.

It was crucial that the harvest be as efficient and effective as possible — life depended on it — so the people would select a Boss and a Police Force to make sure everyone had a task to perform and that they, in fact, performed it.

Then, when the salmon run ended, the Boss and the Police lost their authority and returned to ‘civilian’ status.

What seems clear is that holding the authority temporarily — only while the salmon were running — would make it most likely that the authority would not be abused, not weaponized. Knowing they would be returning to live side by side with the rest of the community would keep things civil, even peaceful.

Another finding shows that in many larger towns and cities when it was determined that a Police Force was needed to keep the peace the force was full-time, but the Police were not. Folks would rotate on then off the force, often serving 6-month stints then replaced. Once again, this would have a moderating influence on the use of power.

Our ancestors were very intentional about making sure that privilege was kept in check.

And a reminder: I would love to deliver a FREE creativity workshop to your non-profit or church group or book club. 60 minutes is great, 90 minutes even better. 6 folks are enough, 12 is wonderful, after that the more the merrier. In-person is most fun. An effective Zoom can also be arranged.
