Comments from Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson about what Tyson Bagent brings to the table speak volumes about the growth he has made as a backup — and hint that a starting gig elsewhere is something that could be on the table.
These words from the Bears’ head coach during his media availability at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis make for the best letter of recommendation you could ever get as a backup quarterback:
“I love Tyson. That’s one that kind of pulls at your heartstrings a little bit because he’s someone that you care about so deeply and he’s a hell of a football player that at some point you want to see him have a chance to do it himself. And so we’ll always do what’s best for our team and our organization.
I do think there is a lot of merit to having a strong No. 2 quarterback, which he certainly fits that bill. I’m of the mind that he’s probably one of the best 32 in the NFL. His preseason tape over the last few years has probably confirmed that, in my opinion. But if I took myself out of the equation, I want what’s best for him. If he would like an opportunity to start, I certainly hope he can get that somewhere.”
That is as glowing a statement as you’ll get from a coach about a backup quarterback. The Bears seem to really love Tyson Bagent. And I can understand why. He seems to have taken to that QB2 role to the point that he appears to be deserving of a starting job. Bagent will not get one in Chicago with Caleb Williams atop the depth chart. But after hearing what the Bears head coach had to say about Williams’ backup, perhaps a QB-needy team should hit GM Ryan Poles’ line ASAP.

Buzz from an Arizona-based reporter had the Cardinals reportedly “intrigued” by Chicago Bears backup quarterback Tyson Bagent. Given the uncertainty at the position with Kyler Murray’s future seemingly up-in-the-air, a new coaching staff, and Bagent’s team-friendly contract, I can understand why that is the case. So when Bears GM Ryan Poles said that he had received calls regarding Bagent’s availability, it certainly felt like a rumor that could have drifted away with a winter breeze had some sticking power.
WHAT WOULD A TYSON BAGENT TRADE EVEN LOOK LIKE?
My read on the situation is that the Bears are open to a potential Tyson Bagent trade. It seems as if the powers that be at Halas Hall are willing to deal Bagent (1) if the price is right in terms of compensation coming Chicago’s way and (2) if it can find a clear path for the 25-year-old quarterback to get a shot at a starting gig. To be clear, I don’t think the Bears are ready to push Bagent out the door. The general manager and head coach clearly value Bagent. But they also seem to want to do right by him. It makes for quite a tightrope to walk.

Considering how many twists and turns an NFL offseason can take, I do not believe this is the last we will hear about Tyson Bagent’s potential trade availability. And I do not think the Arizona Cardinals will be the only team inquiring about possibly acquiring Bagent. Stay tuned. It sounds like the Bears are open for business when it comes to wheeling and dealing this offseason.
