Tyson Bagent trade offers floated by opposing teams, Ryan Poles says ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

With the emergence of Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, other teams have inquired about trading for Tyson Bagent.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles confirmed during a press conference on Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis that he has received calls on Bagent during the offseason.

“We’ve gotten a few calls there. Obviously the tough thing is what Ben (Johnson) thinks about Tyson, what I think about Tyson, and what our locker room thinks about Tyson,” he said. “That’s a really tough decision for us. He would have an opportunity to go and perform for a team and do some really good things.”

Bagent has been with the Bears since joining the team as an undrafted free agent prior to the 2023 season. That season was when he played his most games, starting four contests in place of the injured Justin Fields. He completed 65.7% of his passes, throwing for three touchdowns and six interceptions and racking up 859 passing yards in five games.

The Bears signed Bagent to a two-year, $10 million extension last season, but NFL teams have expressed interest in potentially bringing him in to either compete for a starting job or perhaps even to take the job outright.

Johnson said he’s loved working with Bagent, and that it’s a tough decision regarding the backup quarterback.

“I love Tyson and that’s one that kind of pulls at your heartstrings a little bit because he’s someone you care about so deeply and he’s a hell of a football player that at some point you want to see him have a chance to do it himself,” he said. “We’ll always do what’s best for our team and our organization. There’s a lot of merit to having a strong number two quarterback, which he certainly fits that bill on. I’m of the mind that he’s probably one of the 32 best (quarterbacks) in the NFL.”

Part of that calculus would be who to bring in as a backup to Williams, as the team doesn’t have a defined No. 3 quarterback on its roster currently.

“We spent a lot of time developing him. You’ve got to replace that as well,” Poles said. “It’s an interesting dynamic there that we’re going to have to work through.”

Williams has played in all 34 regular season games for the Bears since he was drafted with the No. 1 overall pick in 2024. Bagent has only appeared in nine games since then, only attempting a handful of passes for the Bears.
