Atlético Madrid sealed their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday after finally seeing off the challenge of Club Brugge, winning 4-1 on the night and 7-4 on aggregate.
Alexander Sørloth’s hat-trick along with Johnny Cardoso’s first goal for the club made the scoreline look more comfortable than it had been for much of the knockout phase play-off tie. Joel Ordóñez had equalised just before half-time to keep the aggregate score level until the La Liga side pulled away in the second half, much to the relief of the majority in the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
Diego Simeone’s men will play Premier League opposition in the round of 16, set to be paired with either Liverpool or Tottenham in Friday’s draw.
Last week’s first leg set the tie up tantalisingly after a 3-3 draw in Brugge, making this the only one of the eight play-off ties to head into the second leg level.
The first moment of note came in the 13th minute when a ball across the Brugge box came to Giuliano Simeone, who poked the ball past Simon Mignolet and went down under a challenge. However, following a quick check by the video assistant referee, on-field referee Clément Turpin pointed for a goal kick to the visitors.
Atlético took the lead in the 23rd minute, though, and it was about as route one as it gets. Jan Oblak fired a long ball downfield to Sørloth, who held off Brandon Mechele well before firing a low shot at goal. The ball squirmed over Mignolet and rolled into the net, with the former Liverpool goalkeeper left red-faced by what looked like it should have been a routine save.
It was a notable occasion for Oblak, his first assist for Atléti on his 529th appearance for the club.
Somewhat against the run of play, though, Club Brugge pulled themselves level in the tie again in the 36th minute. Ordóñez had to go off to get treatment for a bloody nose, but was able to come back on before a Brugge corner was taken. It was just as well, as Mechele won a header at the near post, allowing Ordóñez to nod in at the far.
It was the eighth goal Atlético had conceded from a set-piece in this season’s Champions League, more than any other side in the competition (excl. penalties).
The La Liga side could have been behind moments later when a break down the left led to a cross from Christos Tzolis to Hugo Vetlesen to head towards goal, but Oblak saved well down to his left.
The tie remained level at the break, but it took just two minutes for the hosts to edge back in front in the second half.
Mechele cleared a cross to the edge of the box but only as far as Cardoso, who chested the ball down and fired it low past the despairing dive of Mignolet into the bottom-left corner of the net.
It was the United States international’s first goal for Atlético after joining from Real Betis last summer, and gave Simeone’s side their advantage back.
Both managers turned to their bench, and it was two Atlético subs who combined to set up Sørloth’s second of the night. Ademola Lookman and Antoine Griezmann played neatly around the Brugge defence before the former crossed for the big Norwegian, who couldn’t really miss unmarked in the middle of the box.
The former Crystal Palace striker completed his hat-trick in the 87th minute when he comfortably finished at the back post following Matteo Ruggeri’s cross from the left.
Sørloth became just the second Atléti player to score a Champions League hat-trick, after Mario Mandzukic vs Olympiakos in November 2014.
It was also Sørloth’s 15th goal of the season, now Atlético’s outright top scorer in all competitions ahead of Griezmann and Julián Alvarez (both 13).
Atlético have now progressed from 10 of their 11 previous two-legged European Cup/Champions League knockout-stage ties when avoiding defeat away from home in the first leg, including each of the five under Simeone.
It was a tougher tie than the aggregate score suggested, and Premier League opponents now await for Los Rojiblancos in the last 16.
