Because he’s a bigger-name player just a year removed from a strong season as a starting outfielder, it’s understandable that the Cubs’ Michael Conforto signing might get more attention than your standard minor league deal.
But what you don’t want to happen is start to think that he is necessarily any more or less of a lock to make the Opening Day roster than some of the other fourth outfielder/bench bat possibilities, all of whom also come with stories we could tell about why they are the best candidate. I don’t think this is one of those situations where a guy gets a minor league deal during Spring Training with a wink and a nod that, assuming he’s healthy, he’ll make the team.
We’ve discussed Dylan Carlson and Chas McCormick and Kevin Alcantara and Tyler Austin and Owen Miller quite a bit, for a number of examples, and I really do think that Conforto is best considered as another guy with some potential 2026 value that the Cubs will be sorting out over the next month, while also protecting against injury risk.
