The winter high school sports season is certainly winding down, and the spring season will start in the coming days and weeks.
Girls swimming and diving concluded about a week ago. Wrestling wrapped up Saturday. And, now the boys and girls basketball playoffs are getting underway.
Here’s a look at some of the top athletes, moments and statistics from the local basketball scene this past week:
Athletes of the week
Javon Gonzales, Fort Lupton boys basketball
Gonzales, a senior, was efficient on offense and tenacious on defense in the Bluedevils’ 82-45 road win against Sheridan on Thursday. He had 29 points on 14-of-21 shooting to go with 10 steals, six assists and five rebounds.
Ava Grosboll, Roosevelt girls basketball
Grosboll, a junior, has formed a formidable duo with standout senior Kyla Lin Hollier as of late. The Rough Riders went 3-0 this past week against Berthoud (74-69), Timnath (67-56) and Thompson Valley (67-52). Grosboll averaged 23 points per game on 58% shooting along with 9.3 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game in the three wins.

In Roosevelt’s forementioned three wins this past week, Hollier, a senior, averaged 32.7 points per game, along with 17 rebounds and 2 steals per game.
Hannah Kugler, Prairie girls basketball
Kugler, a junior, was electric in the Mustangs’ 60-39 home win against Weldon Valley on Feb. 17. She scored 31 points on 13-of-24 shooting to go with 19 rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot.
Christian Powell, Severance boys basketball
Powell, a sophomore, and his red-hot Silver Knights squad couldn’t have ended their regular season more emphatically. Powell scored a career-high 41 points on 13-of-21 shooting in Severance’s 97-39 road win against Greeley Central on Saturday. Powell also had four assists and a steal. Powell’s previous career-high in scoring was 25.
Taylor Reese, Dayspring Christian girls basketball
Reese, a freshman, lit up the scoreboard in the Eagles’ 58-32 home win against Belleview Christian on Feb. 16. She scored a career-high 28 points on 11-of-21 shooting while also chipping in five steals and three assists.

Smiley, a senior, filled up the box score this past week, as the Wizards picked up wins against Rocky Mountain (77-54) and Loveland (81-58) to close their regular season. In the two games, he averaged 24.5 points on 51% shooting along with 8.5 rebounds, 5 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
Courtney Steinkamp, Eaton girls basketball
Steinkamp, a junior, was a big factor on both ends of the floor in the Reds’ 70-8 road win against Valley on Feb. 17. She had 32 points on 13-of-25 shooting to go with nine rebounds and nine steals.
Carly Thorpe, University girls basketball
Thorpe, a senior, was nearly perfect in the Bulldogs’ 54-32 win against Wray on Friday. She scored 25 points on 10-of-11 shooting to go with a pair of blocked shots.

Worsley, a junior, recorded an enormous double-double in the Wizards’ tight 54-52 home win against Rocky Mountain on Feb. 17. She had 24 points on 9-of-20 shooting to go with 25 rebounds. Both statistics were career-highs. She also had three steals and three assists.
Moment of the week
Severance’s high-scoring boys basketball squad put up a season-high in points in its regular season finale against Greeley Central on Saturday. The Silver Knights won 97-39 to extend their win streak to 13 games. Severance led 54-21 at halftime, and three players scored double-figures. The Silver Knights are the third seed in the upcoming 5A playoffs.
By the numbers
Three University players scored 22 points apiece in the Bulldogs’ 83-49 boys basketball home win against Weld Central on Feb. 17. Senior Coehn Nitzel scored his 22 on 11-of-15 shooting, while senior John Elbe shot 9 of 16, and senior River Sawyer went 10 of 15. Combined, the trio shot 65.2%. The three players also combined for 20 rebounds, 17 assists, seven steals and three blocked shots.
