Wake Up and Watch Jefferson Rojas Crush His First Home Run of the Spring ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Although he’s just 20 years old and has spent only 39 games at Double-A, Jefferson Rojas is in big league camp this year as a non-roster invite.

We knew that was plausible based solely on his prospect standing (a clear top-five in the system, a top-100 overall to many evaluators), but it was also sound based on how he looks as a player. That isn’t to say he’s quite yet ready for the Major Leagues, but you can see in him a very advanced approach at the plate, good physical development, and enough skill at shortstop and/or second base that he plays beyond his years and level.

That is all to say, I am as interested as ever in seeing Jefferson Rojas get into Spring Training games, show what he can do, and put himself on the radar for a bump to Triple-A later in the year.

The good news is that Rojas crushed his first home run of the spring in yesterday’s game. The bad news is that the game wasn’t televised, so we couldn’t watch the at bat live. The medium news is that there is at least a clip of the homer from the center field view, so we aren’t left with nothing at all from his 107.5 mph, 413-foot no-doubter:

Spring Training performance really doesn’t matter in the end, but you do like seeing more and more power from Jefferson Rojas. He has a great understanding of the strike zone already, and good pitch recognition. He doesn’t have to hit 20+ homers to be valuable as a quality middle infield defender, but he will have to make enough authoritative contact for the overall offensive skillset to play at the highest level.

Going into the 2026 season, what you really want to see from him is a strong first half offensively back at Double-A (he didn’t hit much in his 39-game cup there last year, and the lack of power was particularly noticeable), and at least the potential for a second half call up to Triple-A. It isn’t necessary, as far as age/level go, but that’s the caliber of prospect we want to see him become in 2026. No, it doesn’t mean you’d be looking at him as a 2027 big league replacement for an outgoing Nico Hoerner, for example, but you do want to have some more big-league-ready middle infielders at Iowa the next couple years. It’s an area of weakness in the system right now if there were a run of injuries, which is why the Cubs had to load up on minor league signings.
