When Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts offered up as one of his first thoughts about the season ahead that he wants to win the NL Central, and wants to win more World Series, I saw a lot of folks making fun. Like, oh wow, what a revelation. Owner wants his team to win the division and the World Series. And, yes, that SHOULD be an obvious thing for all MLB owners, since it’s an obvious thing for the fans. Winning should be top of mind at the start of every season.
But the dirty truth is that, at least for some MLB owners, winning is absolutely NOT top of mind, because they don’t believe their fans actually care enough about winning to justify certain financial decisions. I would say that without naming names, but I don’t have to, since one of those owners named himself:

— BTH (@BeyondTheHalo) February 20, 2026Arte Moreno, the long-time owner of the underachieving Angels franchise, believes his fans don’t care about seeing winning baseball. Not even in the top five, he says. To which I say: if I were an owner and my survey results indicated the fans didn’t care about winning, my first instinct would be to figure out what the heck was wrong with my survey.
No surprise, these comments landed Moreno in some hot water with Angels players and the MLBPA:
Angels players "took notice" of owner Arte Moreno suggesting that LAA fans don't prioritize winning.MLBPA director Bruce Meyer met with Angels players on Sunday morning. I spoke with Meyer about the reaction reaction to Moreno's comments.Read: t.co/aeTnR8gLp1 pic.twitter.com/VNx5639qvW
— Sam Blum (@SamBlum3) February 22, 2026Incredibly, this was among Moreno’s thoughts in response to the flap: “For me, I’ve always wanted to win. It’s just, what’s the cost of winning right now?”
I’m really not sure you could say something more perfectly divorced from reality at the moment. In an offseason that saw your club cut payroll by $50 million, after 15 years without a playoff win, and at a time when you’ve seen two of the biggest superstars of the last 20 years pass through your organization without so much as a peep of competitive consequence, it just boggles my mind that this guy thought it was a good idea to talk about the cost of winning after saying his fans don’t care about winning.
I do get that the Angels, like several other teams, are dealing with a disastrous TV situation, and I get that they have desperately needed a roster overhaul for a while now anyway. But I feel badly for Angels fans – the ones who very much do want to see their team win – that Moreno pulled the Angels off the sale market a few years ago. I don’t know that a subsequent owner would’ve been like this.
