Vinny’s View: Suns’ weekend slate filled with offensive inconsistency ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

The Phoenix Suns were missing four of their top players on Sunday night.

Suns fans knew that was the case going into Sunday night’s game against Portland at Mortgage Matchup Center and probably figured, “OK, we’re going to get blown out by 50.”

That didn’t happen but the Suns struggled mightily on the offensive end in an ugly 92-77 loss to the Blazers.

But I won’t dwell on the loss in this space today. The bigger picture is more interesting.

Head coach Jordan Ott said it himself following Sunday night’s loss — “This is not just a one-night thing. We’ve struggled to score for an extended period of time. Shot quality has not been good.”

That was evident over the weekend. So much so that maybe I should be sharing my amazement that the Suns were able to win a game on Saturday against Orlando where many of the same offensive ills were evident.

The Suns have a very hard time getting into their offense. Dribble penetration hasn’t been completely eliminated, but really only Collin Gillespie and Jalen Green can make that happen and create shots for their teammates. Three-point shooting is almost non-existent. Well, that’s not true — there’s plenty of threes going up, but not going in.

Before a 6-for-8 showing in the fourth quarter against Portland, the Suns had seven quarters in which they went 19-of-82 from deep over the weekend. That’s 23%. That’s not good enough to win in the NBA. Their two-game field goal percentage of 35.1% is tied for the ninth-lowest for any two-game stretch in the 58-year history of the franchise.

The Suns have been fun to watch for most of this season — but not being close to full health for now and the forseeable future could sap the fun right out of the equation.
