Despite not winning a single individual event, Shawnee Mission East won the Kansas High School Boy’s 6A State Championship in 290.5 points, upsetting the 3-time defending champions Blue Valley North by 20.5 points. Shawnee Mission East achieved this victory through impressive depth, including 15 individual swimmers and divers who scored points, as well as a victory in the 200 freestyle relay.

Shawnee Mission East’s team of Barrett Tegtmeier (22.50), Cole Person (21.02), Emmet Lynch (21.82), and Luke Sinatra (21.19) won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:26.53. Individually, Tegtmeier placed 10th in the 50 freestyle in 22.57 and 13th in the 100 freestyle in 49.67. Person recorded a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle with a 21.50, missing his best time from earlier this month at the Sunflower League Championships by 0.08, and tied for fifth in the 100 freestyle in 47.72, a new lifetime best by 0.20. Lynch placed sixth in the 200 freestyle in 1:45.40, a new lifetime best by 0.10, and fourth in the 500 freestyle in 4:50.01, falling about two seconds short of his lifetime best set two weeks earlier. The same team of Tegtmeier (49.49), Person (47.93), Lynch (48.13), and Sinatra (48.95) placed second in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:14.50. Grant Kimmel had one of the most interesting performances of the meet as he played key roles for Shawnee Mission East both in the pool and on the diving board. In addition to posting a key breaststroke split (27.34) on the medley relay–the second-fastest in the field–Kimmel also placed third in diving, scoring 456.45 points, and put up a 1:02.26 in the 100 breaststroke to place seventh.

Poe is committed to Indiana University-Indianapolis in the fall. Blue Valley West teammate Weiner took second in the 200 IM behind Poe in 1:53.98, obliterating his prelims time of 1:56.20 which itself marked a new lifetime best by 0.02. Weiner was victorious in the 100 backstroke, posting a time of 50.66, a lifetime best by 0.14. Weiner and runner-up Andrew Martin (51.04) of Mill Valley were the only swimmers to clear the 53-second barrier in the field. Martin also finished third behind Poe and Weiner in the 200 IM in 1:55.44, culminating in a total time drop of 1.88 seconds prior to prelims.
