The 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics Closing Ceremony will see hundreds of athletes marching together in a celebratory end to the Games, but the order will be different this time.

That’s because the athletes instead enter en masse.
They will enter behind a pair of flag bearers from each of the 92 participating nations, including biathlete Lisa Vittozzi and speedskater Davide Ghiotto for host Italy, and hockey player Hilary Knight and ice dancer Evan Bates for the United States – all gold medal winners.
The athletes marching as a group to end the Games began with the 1956 Melbourne Games. It was meant to show togetherness and comradery after the competitive nature of the competition, with the idea originating from a Chinese man named John Ian Wing.
Wing wrote an anonymous letter with the idea to the International Olympic Committee, and the idea was implemented to great success, with the Melbourne Olympics becoming known as the “Friendly Games.”
The show is set to kick off at 1:30 p.m. CT on Sunday, following the gold medal hockey match between the U.S. and Canada. It is expected to last around two hours and 30 minutes.
