No. 25 men’s basketball survives late scare from LSU, 90-83 ...Middle East

No. 25 Alabama men’s basketball knocked off the LSU Tigers 90-83 at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge on Saturday night, despite a valiant comeback effort from the Tigers.

Star guard Labaron Philon Jr. struggled in the win, despite coming off a career-high 35 points in the team’s 117-115 win over No. 20 Arkansas on Wednesday. He notched 8 points on a poor 2/8 from the field and failed to connect on a 3-pointer. Philon was listed as probable on the SEC Injury Report on Friday evening.

“We were hoping he’d feel better today, and he did, but he still wasn’t anything close to where he needs to be,” head coach Nate Oats said of Philon postgame. “So, it’ll be good to have tomorrow off, and we’ll have to try and manage his workload during practice Monday, Tuesday and see where we get him on Wednesday.”

Star guard Aden Holloway led the Crimson Tide in scoring and tallied 17 points on 5/13 shooting. Four others followed Holloway with double figures, including center Aiden Sherrell, who scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double.

“We were plus-16 when he was in the game,” Oats said of Holloway. “His offensive leverage was positive, too. He was good.”

Alabama began the game poorly from the field, shooting 2/6 in the opening four minutes. It picked up the pace from inside the arc as the half progressed, but still struggled from deep, making just one of its first seven attempts from 3-point land.

The scoring ramped up to end the half, as Alabama made seven of its last eight shots before the break. A 6-0 run from the Tigers in the final 41 seconds trimmed the Crimson Tide’s lead to 3 points when the buzzer sounded.

Alabama seized control of the game with a 17-9 blitz to open the second half, which extended its lead to double digits. It made four of its first five shots from the field, while the Tigers made just 3/12. Sherrell and Holloway were red-hot in the first 5:52 of action after the break, combining for 14 of the Crimson Tide’s 17 points.

The sizzling shooting continued as the Crimson Tide took a commanding 14-point advantage through guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr., who had 10 second-half points. It also held LSU to 4/15 from the field in the opening 8:01 of the final period, pairing quality on both sides of the floor.

LSU found a defensive rhythm after Sherrell’s fifth foul with 5:56 to play, forcing the Crimson Tide to go without a bucket for over three and a half minutes. Despite cooling Alabama’s scoring attack, the Tigers remained down double digits, as they continued to shoot below 30% from the field.

Alabama entered a scoring lull while Holloway sat with four fouls, allowing LSU to close the deficit to 8 with 4:16 to go. The Tigers’ offense continued to sizzle, making 6/8 to end the contest.

The strong close to the evening was not enough for LSU to pull off a stunner in the Bayou, though, as Alabama nailed eight free throws in the final four minutes of play, closing out a sixth straight victory. The win kept the Crimson Tide alive in the SEC regular season title hunt, trailing Florida by two games.

“You gotta give them a lot of credit, because they could’ve easily not [done] what they did tonight, based on some of the tough one, two possession losses they’ve had,” Oats said of LSU.

Alabama will return to the court Wednesday evening, hosting the Mississippi State Bulldogs at Coleman Coliseum. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. CT, and the game can be seen on ESPNU.
