Unfortunately, Johnson was clearly operating at less than full strength. He played just seven games all year, finishing with seven tackles, one interception, and two pass breakups. Those numbers barely register compared to his usual impact. But the stat sheet doesn’t tell the full story. Johnson admitted he wasn’t 100 percent and that it would take time to regain form. And yet, he still pushed to be on the field for a defense that needed its top cover corner.
Down the stretch, there were flashes. Moments where his footwork, timing, and physicality resembled the All-Pro-caliber defender the Bears rely on. It wasn’t the dominant season many expected. It was a survival season, one built on grit more than peak performance.

Johnson is entering the third year of a four-year, $76 million deal he signed after receiving the Franchise Tag in 2024. Johnson is scheduled to have a cap number of $24.5 million this season, which represents 7.8 percent of the Bears’ total cap space. Moving on from Johnson this year isn’t a viable option. Because even though a cut would create $6.5 million in cap space, it would come with $18 million in dead money hitting the Bears’ books with a pre-June 1 cut. A post-June 1 designation would create $15.5 million in cap savings. However, it wouldn’t be available to use until after June 1.

The conversation around Johnson entering 2026 isn’t about ability. It’s about health and availability. When fully right, Johnson still the Bears’ No. 1 corner and a tone-setter on the outside who allows the rest of the secondary to slot into more natural roles. Chicago’s defense is built differently when he’s available and confident in his movement.
At 27, Johnson is still in his prime. If the offseason allows him to fully reset and eliminate the lingering effects of an injury-shortened year, there’s every reason to believe 2025 becomes an outlier rather than the beginning of a trend.
For the Bears’ defense to take the next step, they don’t need Johnson to reinvent himself. They just need him healthy.
