Quick Bears Stadium Thoughts, Jeff King’s Promotion, One Random NFL Free Agent to Watch, and Other Friday Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Day 31 of the Chicago Bears offseason. The bad news is that Fake Spring in Chicago is over. But the good news is that the Chicago Cubs play baseball today. The White Sox play, too. I’ll let you be the judge if that is good news or not.

There was a lot of noise about what was (and wasn’t) said about the Chicago Bears stadium project on Thursday. The Athletic, Tribune, Sun-Times, and Capitol News Illinois have well-rounded writeups summing up latest on a situation that has more unnecessary plot twists than a WWE script for Monday Night Raw. I encourage you to read those stories to get a fuller understanding of what is going on with the Bears stadium saga. It boils down to this: Yes, the state of Indiana and the Bears have made progress on a potential new home for the team in Hammond. That is undeniable. However, it is far from the done deal some people made it out to be because they didn’t read or comprehend (possibly both) the statement that was put out by the team. The team fell well short offering up a firm committment. And it makes me think this: If the Indiana deal is so good, then why not run and take it right now while it is on the table?

These latest updates are giving me flashbacks to the 2024 offseason when I felt like I was yelling into the abyss while trying to warn Bears fans about the importance of understanding who is selling the news, how they are framing it, why they are doing it, and what they were getting out of it with regards to the Justin Fields-Caleb Williams situation. Remember when pepole were buying blue checkmarks on Twitter/X and lying to your face about what they knew all so they could make a quick buck? A similar thing is happening here. As far as I’m concerned, I see it as a sign of disrespect from them to you because they clearly think you are stupid enough to fall for their trap. Frankly, you should be offended that someone thinks of you in that way. The best advice I can give here is this: If someone posts something that spikes your emotions, they’re doing it on purpose — so don’t give into their bait. You’ll be better off for it. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Getty Images) A thought I can’t shake: The same people who are fighting online, in print, over the air, and in the comments section about where the new Bears stadium should be are the same ones who are getting priced out no matter where the stadium goes. Stop and think it for a minute. Days after the team announced it was raising prices on season-ticket holders by an average of 13.5 percent, an entity valued at $8.9 billion in September 2025 goes about leveraging the tax dollars of their customer base in an attempt to sidestep paying tax values that align with the value of the property it plans on building while everyday folks aren’t gifted that type of luxury. If a franchise that is valued at nearly $9 billion can’t afford to pay the corresponding tax rate on the property it owns and plans making money off of in the future, should it consider selling the team to someone who can? Probably. Oof. This feels damning:

There are people inside Halas Hall who are surprised the Bears haven't broken ground on a stadium yet, @LaurenceWHolmes says.@MattSpiegs seconds that."There are people who are pissed off and annoyed that thought Kevin (Warren) would've gotten this done already," Spiegs says. pic.twitter.com/iHDUkf1QY4

— 104.3 The Score (@thescorechicago) February 19, 2026 The Bears’ pending move is something we’ve been covering since September 2022. Kevin Warren has been here since the spring of 2023. Since then, he has done nothing to move the team closer to building a stadium. In his efforts to involve other municipalities as a negotiation tactic, Warren has likely wasted tens of millions of dollars — all while the cost of construction and materials has jumped. Don’t get me wrong. I know he walked into a situation he didn’t create. But what has he done to make it better? It’s not as if he hasn’t had time to do so. For years, news of the Bears announcing a promotion from within would have given me the ick. But that isn’t what happened with the team’s move to elevate Jeff King into the assistant general manager role that opened with the departure of Ian Cunningham to the Atlanta Falcons. In fact, this was a logical and sensible move for the franchise. I’d even go as far as to say that this is an example of how the football operations are moving in a way that is the polar opposite of what is happening on the business side. I’m used to both sides being chaotic, so having one that is working in a functional manner is nice. Titles Jeff King has held in his 12 years with the team before becoming the Assistant GM: Scouting intern, Pro Scout, Assistant director of pro scouting, Director of pro scouting, Co-director of player personnel, Senior director of player personnel. King was also a two-time second-team All-ACC player at Virginia Tech and had a 108-game NFL playing career with the Carolina Panthers (2006-10) and Arizona Cardinals (2011-12). It is nice to see the Bears reward hard work with a promotion. This is the type of thing that good organizations do. More on that in my appearance on 104.3 The Score:

Since then, I”ve followed the station to its homes on 1160-AM, 670-AM, and now 104.3-FM. The idea of WSCR being a legacy media organization would have boggled the mind of a younger Luis. But to see the station’s growth from its inception speaks volumes about the sports fans in this city and the type of thought leaders this area produces. In short, yesterday was a dream come true. May all of you reading this get opportunities to follow your own dreams and make them happen.

ESPN’s Ben Solak ranks the deepest (and thinnest) positions in NFL free agency and the upcoming draft. We’ll dive deeper into this at a later time, but I wanted to share this now because I find it encouraging that some of the Bears’ biggest needs are at positions considered to be fairly deep. Phew. Douglas Clawson (CBS Sports) writes about Malik Willis as the most interesting player in NFL free agency. The Green Bay Packers quarterback played well enough to get a longer look as a viable starting NFL quarterback. It will be worth monitoring his market, especially since teams that miss out on him could conceivably come kicking the tires on Bears backup quarterback Tyson Bagent as a trade option.
